From LSM graduate David Brook, class of 2003, now working at Blueprint Film:
Two of us here are University of Lincoln graduates (including myself – I did a BA in Media Production, graduating in 2003) and we thought our latest endeavour might interest current students.
We’re putting on a Festival of Japanese Culture in Lincoln on January 21-27th 2013. It will include an art exhibition running through the week at Cafe Portico and on Sunday 27th at The Venue in Bishop Grosseteste University there will be a host of activities surrounding the screening of 2 classic Japanese films – Akira and Pigs and Battleships. We’ve got a martial arts demonstration, a musical performance, food and drink and a talk preceding Pigs and Battleships by Jasper Sharp, an expert in Japanese cinema.
It’s this talk that I think will be most interesting to film and media students at the University of Lincoln. Jasper has written several books on Japanese films, particular genre cinema, features on a number of DVD/Blu-Ray commentaries and is the co-editor of Midnight Eye, the premiere online resource on Japanese cinema. He will be discussing the work of Pigs and Battleships director Shôhei Imamura and the Japanese New Wave movement which began in the late 50’s.
