Media Production 2008 Grad Kaz Bielecki is the Artistic Director of the first Neurodivergent film festival produced in the UK by the award winning Arts organisation DYSPLA. It works “internationally in film, immersive theatre, installation & digital art to shed light on Dyslexic Narrative and the Dyslexic Aesthetic.” The University of Lincoln School of Film & Media will be screening the winning entries of this film fest on Wednesday 21 March, 1.30-3pm in the Stephen Langton Building (Brayford Pool campus).
LSFM’s Senior Lecturer Marcella Forster said: The festival showcases work by dyslexic and neurodivergent filmmakers. Festival organisers will introduce students to the winning films and there’ll be an opportunity to ask them questions about the festival. All our students, staff and graduates are welcome to attend.
As most people would probably agree, 2008 (the year the financial crisis started to hit) was a pretty bad time to be looking for a job. That was the year I graduated from Lincoln, getting my BA in Media Production.
I needed a job badly and wanted to get out of Lincoln. I actually fell pretty lucky. Not that I got a job in my field of study. Nothing quite so glorious. A friend I’d worked with some years earlier was now a manager. He needed somebody, because a person he’d hired had pulled out. So, I returned to the company that I’d left because I’d gotten bored of it and wanted to study. But eating is far more important than staving off boredom. I spent the next year or so scouring job sites, trying to find something that would fit my skill set and interests. Months went by, applications went off, and I never even received a call-back. Needless to say I was pretty fed up. To give myself a leg up on the career ladder, I applied (and was accepted) on a Masters programme at Sussex. All was set. And then I saw a job advert, that I wouldn’t have seen had it not been for my friend’s offhand comment about how I “should work for Nintendo”. Continue reading
Congrats to our 2008 graduate, an independent filmmaker and LSFM part-time lecturer Darren Scales for winning an Excellence Award at The IndieFEST Film Awards, in Los Angeles, for The Drift (2014). Darren at Backyard Productions UK directed and produced the science-fiction feature film, which was made over three years on a low budget of £5,000 and with a high number of willing volunteers (100!). He said:
I am so pleased that The Drift has won this award, more so because of the fantastic contribution made by the crew, many of them from the University of Lincoln – at this School. It just goes to show that hard work and motivation pays off, now with an LA award, even when you have a tiny budget! The charitable indie is currently looking for distribution: mail@bypuk.com

After three years in the making … with a budget of £5,000 … the support of hundreds of volunteers … the premier of The Drift (2014) science-fiction feature film was on Saturday at the University of Lincoln. Reviews are coming in from Midlands Movies to ITV News.
Our alumni networking with students at Meet the Graduates is a main event at the Lincoln School of Film & Media. But LSFM have alumni coming on-campus all year to share their experiences with students. Senior Lecturer Dave McCaig has organised graduates from industry on Mondays: 10, 17, 24 Nov and 1st Dec. He said: these alumni demonstrate the strength of the multi-disciplinary degrees at LSFM. With a strong background in media practices during their degrees and a combination of hard work and ambition, these guest speakers have shown that the School’s highly valued in the media industries. Our 2008 alumnus Ben Jay is a Producer at Inclusive Digital. The company manages the web content for Notts TV as it ‘specialises in videos and website production.’ Ben said Inclusive Digital is producing two series for Notts TV: ‘A Day in the Life’ and Nottingham Now and Then’.
Notts TV was awarded a 12 year licence to broadcast a television channel on Freeview Channel 8 and Notts TV is launched today at 4pm. Notts TV will also be on Virgin 159 but @Notts_TV said: “If you experience issues tuning in, please bear with us, we’re working on it!”
LSM’s 2008 alumnus Director and Producer Darren Scales (and a part-time lecturer at the School) tells us about his latest venture at Backyard Productions UK. Apparently the project was done on a budget of £5,000 with goodwill from a bunch of local and media volunteers!
The Drift Trailer HD “is an original sci-fi trailer made by LSM graduates and undergrads. We have really gone all out to make this a massive movie with a micro-budget! That is the biggest challenge: creating an original story with that immersive movie look with next to no funding – but I think we have done it. Now in the post-production phase, I have no doubt that THE DRIFT (set 100 years from now) is going to be something really special. The movie will be out at the end of the year.”

“I cannot remember a time when I did not have a love for sound” said Matt North. He was in the first cohort of BA (Hons) Audio Production students and has successfully pursued his passion as a sound recordist. Matt is on LSM’s mentoring pilot (thanks again!), which links professionals with our students: “Media mentoring is going great. It’s good to be able to pass on advice to soon-to-be graduates using my knowledge and experiences. I would have found media mentoring really useful in my final year.” See Matt on-campus for ‘Headspace’.
He will be joining sound industry professionals on 30th April. Senior Lecturer Zara Healy’s organising the networking event for radio and audio students, which will be on a first come basis. More nearer the time, but you can see the audio & radio guest list below! First a career update from Matt:
“After graduating from AP in 2012, I started work as a Technical Operator for Ideal Shopping Direct, across their range of shopping TV channels including Ideal World and Create & Craft before being promoted to Audio Operator, where I mixed over 500 hours of broadcast audio across the company’s network until last June when I was fortunate enough to land a job as a Location Sound Recordist for a small kit & crew company called Videoheads, based in White City in London. Since then, I have been recording location sound for a wide range of TV programming, commercials, corporate and legal films with credits including Crimewatch, iTunes Festival 2013, The Gadget Show and have recently come back from shooting in the Philippines in conjunction with BBC’s The One Show & Sport Relief. I also work on audio post-production at home in whatever spare time I have for both short and feature films.” ‘Headspace’ is a joint LSM radio and audio event where students can meet 10 industry professionals, some are our graduates. Hello. I’m an Assistant Producer on the third series of Gadget Man – very chuffed indeed! I keep meaning to write a blog post, but work is relentless at the moment.
