Well done from all at LSM to Year 1 Audio Production student Alice Asbury who received the University of Lincoln’s scholarship award.

The Excellence Scholarship recognised Alice’s outstanding academic achievement. She attained the highest amount of tariff points in one sitting during her BTEC Extended Diploma in Music. Alice’s accomplishment put her in the category of ‘the highest achieving new undergraduate students joining the institution.’

Lincoln School of Media’s Alice was one of nine first year students, from across the University’s Colleges, to get an Excellence Scholarship from the Vice Chancellor Professor Mary Stuart: “Scholarships represents a very special moment for us all here at the University of Lincoln, when we acknowledge the successes of our newest undergraduate students.”

Curator for Altered Partnership – Art & ancient churches together

The Altered partnership is recruiting a new Curator, which will be a 1-year freelance paid contract. The Curator will lead the artistic direction and management of a one year touring programme of artworks around several or more of Lincolnshire’s parish churches. The closing date’s 5pm on 31 March 2014.

‘This post will not be salaried. There will be a set fee for project delivery, which will include all travel, sustenance, labour, communications and material expenses. The maximum fee available for this is £10,000; to be paid in agreed installments. The outputs and outcomes of the project may be delivered by either an individual or company. Continue reading →

Aleysha Minns on her Internship, at MtG 2014 & LSM Media Mentor

Class of 2013

February has been a busy month! I have just about completed my Production Assistant internship at Warp Films in Sheffield and I have had the best time, not just for experience, but because I am a huge fan of their films. I have experienced working in their head office with some extremely talented and well-respected people, such as multiple BAFTA award winning Diarmid Scrimshaw, the Producer of ‘Tyrannasaur’, which was such a highlight for me.

While I was there, I had the chance to work on a wide range of tasks such as, working with contracts and preparing paperwork for distribution companies, checking transcripts for DVDs, film development research and valuable administration experience. I also got to experience the feeling of excitement of a film appearing at film festivals and waiting for reviews and award nominations to come in. I learnt so much from this experience and have enjoyed every minute of it. Continue reading →

Update: Media Culture 2020 European Programme

Find out what 9 Lincoln School of Media students and 2 lecturers got up to in Latvia when they completed the 2nd edition of Media Culture 2020. It is an innovative EU-funded programme designed to explore new modes of collaborative teaching & learning. Here’s an update from LSM’s Martyn Thayne and Graham Cooper:

The main objective of the Erasmus Intensive Programme was to break down classroom and campus walls by creating an open learning environment, where students from different countries and fields could explore and learn together. The multi-disciplinary project featured five universities from across Europe, including Lincoln, the University of Vic (Spain/Catalonia), Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Liepaja University (Latvia), and HKU Hilversum (Netherlands). In addition to the delivery of a number of interactive, online workshops, the project culminated in a two-week intensive programme hosted by Liepaja University, Latvia.

Congrats to LSM’s Graduate Gemma Pass, Class of 2013

Hi, just wanted to share a few things! My name’s Gemma Pass and I graduated in 2013. When leaving university I so had just one thing in my head – getting into media production. And now after working in the media for 6 months I think it’s so important that current LSM students realise that there is so much more to the media than just production!

After leaving Lincoln I picked up a few runner day jobs and absolutely loved my time working on shows. But between that time I was miserable. It’s so hard to pick up long term contracts without some more permanent experience under my belt and worst of all I couldn’t afford to move to London without a guarantee that long term work was there to pay my rent. It was then that I came across a job as a Junior Scheduler near London. It wasn’t as glamorous as production work but hey it was a foot in the door. Now 6 months down the line I know I made the right choice. Since starting in August I have launched several TV channels, created promos for TV, designed channel logos and had complete editorial decisions on what plays out on air. Now my position with Canis Media is Channel Management and Scheduling Executive. Continue reading →

Media Graduate & Freelance Cameraman Daniel Bowring

2009 Media Technology alumnus Daniel Bowring works as a freelance camera operator and assistant for productions working with Bear Grylls to Freddie Flintoff. He feels that working as a runner laid the foundations for his future career: “You really have to be prepared to start at the bottom in this industry, I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to be a cameraman to start off working in a camera facilities company. You’ll learn a lot and they’ll still keep hiring you freelance after you’ve left.” The University’s alumni team caught up with Dan about flying the world:

Daniel’s work has recently been featured on the ‘Mountains’ episode of Bear Grylls’ Escape From Hell, where he filmed the survival expert perform stunts and survival techniques across the Dolomites mountain range in north-eastern Italy. He said: “It was great filming. Bear’s a really nice guy. It’s a lot of pressure though, he wouldn’t particularly want to jump down a Mountain into icy water more than once so, you really had to try to get everything perfect on the first take.” Continue reading →

LSM’s Level 3 project group Wall Breaker Productions need your support to make a short film ‘The Fisherman’. It has a Kickstarter campaign with the goal to raise £950 (which’ll be added to the £1,000 in the Wall Breaker’s pot). The indie is nearly there – just need £330 by 10 March!
