From Third Years to Freshers – Our Advice

Rachel HagreenHello! I’m Rachel Hagreen, a third year Media Production student. This is my first official post as a LSM student blogger, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to hand out a few pieces of advice for first year students studying Media Production or Film and TV, although the advice will almost certainly be useful for any student!

Two years ago if somebody had offered me advice I wouldn’t have bothered reading it because if we’re being totally honest all we care about this week is being a fresher and we tend to put our courses to the back of our mind at least for the first week but here’s my first piece of advice: read this list of advice from fellow third year students and try and take it all in!

I just wanted to report back on LSM’s LincDog freshers’ event, which was all about getting the students to meet each other and work out ways to collaborate creatively with one another.

Just under 300 students across all 3 programmes took part in our day long event, creating 60 second films using their mobile phones, shooting across the city. A huge thanks to all involved. Continue reading

Freshers make an impact today to produce a ‘short’ for LincDog

LincDogToday it’s LincDog day for all LSM’s freshers. This morning in the Jackson Theatre first years will form groups of 4-5, with each group being allocated a location in the city. The task is to plan, write and shoot a 1 minute video using their mobile phones in the designated locations responding to the brief: MAKING AN IMPACT.

Graham Cooper said the day will run through like this: Continue reading

LSM’s Sound Theatre: Recording with Robert Hardy

Robert Hardy_LSM Sound TheatreActor Robert Hardy records in our super Sound Theatre – after a fire alarm goes off and he mastered some tongue twisters from reading the Magna Carta! Courtesy of Mary Powell we’ve republished an extract of her article from the Good Taste magazine:

2015 is going to be very special. Anniversaries abound, particularly the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215, the Castle restoration will be complete and a series of Magna Carta events are planned throughout the 800th anniversary year. We are also planning Lincolnshire’s Great Exhibition 2015 where the most exciting and rarely seen works of art will be displayed in The Collection, Usher Gallery and Wren Library.  However, exciting moments are already happening as I head over to the University of Lincoln to sit in on an unusual sound recording. Lord Cormack, Chairman of the Historic Lincoln Trust has invited the actor Robert Hardy to record the full text of Magna Carta and he has very kindly agreed. The School of Media undoubtedly have some of the best facilities for students and they have volunteered their sound theatre and expertise.

“I’m a bit sore now, but chuffed I did it.” Well done to LSM’s Senior Lecturer and graduate Graham Cooper on his Cycle for Life on 8th September 2013. The 70km bike ride was in aid of his chosen charity Farleigh Hospice. So far Graham’s raised £220 and he said you can still donate at his Just Giving page. “Any contribution however big or small would be gratefully received. Don’t forget to add gift aid so the tax man does his part, too! Thank you.” Continue reading

Rachel Hagreen on freelance jobs

Hello.  Here’s another post from me – a Lincoln School of Media Student.

Rachel Hagreen's freelancing projectsI became a freelancer completely by accident and it was never something I considered as part of plan. I had a BBQ in summer 2012 and a girl who I was once friends with in high school turned up and got talking to me asking the standard generic question ‘so, how’s uni?’… I got chatting about it and she started telling me about the business she and her mum have, Happiness Millionaire, she mentioned that they were looking to create some short videos to ultimately make into a mobile app and asked if I fancied doing it? Since it was to be the first time I’d independently produced any form of film related work I said I’d happily do it free of charge as I’d use it as an opportunity to learn some new skills.
