Universal Pictures’ Emerging Writers Fellowship

The Emerging Writers Fellowship is an exciting new program at Universal Pictures designed to identify and cultivate new and unique voices with a passion for storytelling. We are looking for talented screenwriters who have the potential to thrive, but don’t have access to or visibility within the industry.

Universal Pictures’ will entertain applications for the fellowship beginning on September 3, 2013. Interested applicants should submit an original screenplay as well as additional background materials in order to be considered. All semi-finalists will then be asked to submit a second screenplay. Ten finalists will be selected and interviewed in Los Angeles. Up to five fellows will be chosen to participate in the program.

Make a trailer for the Giffgaff challenge

Here’s a fantastic film-related challenge – a chance to show off your film making skills and win some great entertainment prizes. The challenge is called ‘Tailor a Trailer’ and we’re looking for people to create a trailer for an imaginary film, related to mobile phones in some way. TomSka runs YouTube for a day

LSM graduate Tom Ridgewell, alias TomSka – was selected as one of only seven individuals from the entire YouTube community to curate the site for a day, as part of a global online event celebrating all things science fiction, comics and gaming.

“Geek Week” is YouTube’s second themed content strand following the recent “Comedy Week”, and Tom, who has over two million subscribers on YouTube, was invited to launch the event. Continue reading →

Ewen Glass

IMDB ProfileLSM Lecturer Ewen Glass was one of five filmmakers selected to be supported by Creative England to attend the prestigious talent development programme at last month’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF). EIFF Talent Lab took place during the festival and offered up-and-coming filmmakers the opportunity to learn from the world’s key film industry players. It brought together thirty emerging directors, producers and screenwriters with key UK and international film professionals in a number of ways to help advise and inspire them for the next steps in their careers.

In Edinburgh, Ewen benefited from a variety of advice sessions, workshops and masterclasses aimed at the next generation of film talent. He had the unmissable opportunity to discuss the industry, their projects and their ideas with a selection of invited industry professionals including sales agents, executive producers, literary agents, story editors and distributors. Ewen said: “An invaluable experience, one which not only arms you with a whole new set of professional contacts and an improved skillset, but which fosters a sense of community among up and coming film-makers.

Barbican Shorts 2013

Short film submissions are invited for screenings at the Barbican‘s Framed Festival. Films must be under 10 minutes and must link to one of the following themes: ‘Imagine’, ‘Insight’, ‘Slice of Life’ or ‘Taboo’. For ages 16-25: Full details.

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and Baltic Film and Media School of Tallinn University are calling for entries for Student & Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers (19 – 23 November 2013). The deadline for submitting entries is 15th September 2013, and the festival is billed as “.the only international short film festival IN THE WORLD that gathers a film lover, a filmmaker, an industry professional and a film student under the common denominator – a sleepwalker. We call a filmmaker whose short film story runs its course in a dream pace a sleepwalker. Lincoln Film Society

Festival programmeLincoln Film Society (LFS) is open for membership now until 31st August 2013. Membership rates are for the 2013-14 season, for approximately 24 screenings.

BFI Academy: ‘The Delivery’ and ‘Behind the Scenes’

This short film was made by students attending the East Midlands British Film Institute (BFI) Academy sessions, held earlier this year at the University of Lincoln, with help from craft mentors at the Lincoln School of Media (LSM) – staff, students and graduates. The course was jointly co-ordinated by Robert Pitman (CfBT Education Services) and Brian Hall (LSM).

Cinema and Graham Greene

Lincoln Film Festival, 6.30 p.m.Tuesday 25th June, LPAC: Screening: The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949, UK, 104 mins). One of British cinema’s most enduring and atmospheric thrillers, this endlessly watchable adaptation of Greene’s Cold War spy classic set in the backstreets of ravaged Vienna helped make Orson Welles a screen star.

Ticket price: £5 full, £4 concessions [including LFS members]. Free glass of wine from 5.30pm
