Class of 2012, Samuel Cox | Creative Technologist

I’m currently working for a creative technology company called rehabstudio as a creative technologist … funnily enough! It basically means that I generate concepts, ideas and prototypes for brands such as Google, Converse and Red Bull, as well as internal R&D. I usually focus on building and engineering physical objects/things that are also digital in some way (similar to the phrase “internet of things” that’s getting pasted around at the minute). I also make this kind of stuff in my spare time, like BitTag, which questions our relationship and how we value fiat currency in the physical world when compared with new Cryptocurrencies. This gained the attention of the BBC, live CNBC (pretty nerve racking) Yahoo and Cnet to name a few.

Flood Beacon is my latest project focusing on using technology for good. It is engineered to broadcast live data such the current water level, GPS location and any sudden accelerations the beacon may feel from sudden flooding. Alerts can then be sent to our smartphone application (push notification when someone is in immediate danger), monitoring stations.

I have always been creative since I can remember and loved to paint and draw, it is in my genes and what I feel I was born to do. I then came across technology and put the two together as photography is a form or art. In 2006 I found my new love which was film photography.

At University I did my first 2 years continuing the media module photography along with other modules. But in my third year I specialised and decided to focus on Single Camera. I carried out various roles but found my passion and enthusiasm to rise when I took on the role of Camera Operator and DoP within production of short films. I found that I love being behind the camera and seeing all the exciting visuals, which only YOU, the person who has control over the camera gets the privilege to see FIRST and be in control of creating these. We used Canon DSLRs to film the short films, below you can see my camera work in action.

I had already been doing some photography work for free during 3rd year at uni to help build up my portfolio. After LSM, I started up in August 2013 once I moved back home to Cambridgshire / Bedfordshire – I am not sure how it all fell into place after this but it just happened like it was meant to be…. unconsciously! See this visual programme, which will help you to find final year students’ work in the MHT Building on the Brayford Pool campus at the University of Lincoln. The video was created by LSM students Emily Cowlishaw, Catherine Chibnall, with thanks to Alex O’Brien and Rachel Dodds and music by students in Audio Production and Media Production.

THIS evening the LSM Showcase is still going strong, ahead of another day tomorrow, and you’re invited to network in the EMMTEC Lecture Theatre. Come along to the Lincoln School of Media’s end of year degree show. See the next generation of creatives’ work in the MHT building from noon on Wednesday 28th to Friday 30th May. ‘Picture Post’ superb archive collection for students and staff

Iconic archive of photo-journalistic magazines will support research for students and staff at the University of Lincoln. The library team won a bid to completely house the collection of Picture Post, which is one of Britain’s most significant war-time publications. Lincoln School of Media Principal Lecturer Colin Reiners: “Our collection consists of every copy of Picture Post ever published, offering students direct access to material covering the social history of Britain between 1938 and 1957.” Lizzy Mitchell from the University Press Office shared the good news:

The collection, which consists of almost 50,000 pages, was gifted by the family of a local collector, whose affection for the publication saw him amass and preserve each individual copy of the magazine. It will now be stored in the University of Lincoln’s Zibby Garnett Library for special archive materials, overseen by the University’s Academic Subject Librarian, Dr Frederick Dickinson. What’s the Value of Work Experience? This is the next clip in the Q&A series from Meet the Graduates 2014. The networking event between our students and graduates was part of Lincoln School of Media’s 20th anniversary at the University of Lincoln. Thanks to all alumni, students and staff who came to MtG 2014.

Alumni Stuart Lutes (Class of 2001), Adam Verity (Class of 2002), Zoe Easey (Class of 2007), Phil Stevens (Class of 2010), Holly Smith (class of 2010) and Stephen Bernard (Class of 2013) were on ‘Graduate Question Time’. LSM’s student crew, via New Media Lincs, Year 2 Rory McCarney, Year 3 Kirsty Gibson and Kamil Rewers captured the popular Networking & Graduate Question Time. In this piece, our former students share their experiences about where’s best to be based in the country for opportunities and the value in doing work experience.
