Yesterday we opened applications for Radio 1 & 1Xtra’s Take It On Trainee scheme.
We’re practicing what we preach with Take it On, by opening the doors of Radio 1 & 1Xtra’s new HQ and offering paid placements that give young people the opportunity to build experience and get involved in what we do at the networks. Four trainees will start with us on 8 week placements at the end of January and placements will then run across the year.

Blog post by Audio Production graduate Simon Ross:
Since leaving the University of Lincoln, I have been spending time at BBC Lincolnshire as a Broadcast Assistant for a variety of shows. One of the biggest shows I am fortunate enough to now be part of is the Lincolnshire branch of the nationally recognised BBC Introducing initiative. BBC Introducing focuses on discovering and promoting unsigned artists from around the country by allocating a specific department in all of the BBC’s local radio stations.
“You have to have a lot of determination. If this is the industry you want to be in, then don’t give up. It may take years, but if you’re passionate, it’ll show through.”
After handing in my final assignment in 2010, I only stayed at Lincoln for another month. I was tempted to stay longer of course and make use of the University’s equipment and try to delay the realisation that my student life was over, but I was pretty confident that I was going to get a job in London, or at least an internship quite quickly. How hard can that be, I thought. After an intense final year to complete a 50 minute television drama on a student budget, I thought I was prepared for anything. Looking back now, I was unbelievably naïve.
