Chris Riley, Visiting Professor & Filmmaker | Short Poyekhali!

Visiting-Prof-Chris-RileySee the short for British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake to mark his first orbit of the Earth, today 15.12.2015 at 11.03 GMT. Poyekhali! (2015) is made by filmmaker, who is the University of Lincoln’s Visiting Professor, Chris Riley. The film was created in collaboration with composer Úlfur Eldjárn. “Poyekhali! blends Yuri Gagarin’s preparations for his first historic orbit of the Earth on the 12th April 1961 with those of British astronaut Tim Peake as he prepares to leave from the same space port on the 15th December 2015, to make his own first orbit.” #ForTim  #Principia

Magna Carta 800th Anniversary | Original document in Lincoln (UK)

magna-carta-web-215 June 2015 is the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.  There are four original documents of Magna Carta, which were sealed by King John in 1215, and one is in LINCOLN.  ‘The Great Charter’ agreed the rule of law applied to all and recognised civil liberties. Visit Lincoln said the city is ‘the only place in the world where you can find an original copy of Magna Carta together with the Charter of the Forest … The two charters belong to Lincoln Cathedral and are housed in Lincoln Castle.’  A new visitor centre at the castle, events and public lectures will celebrate Lincoln Cathedral’s Magna Carta. magna-carta-vault-LincolnCastleAs part of the Great Magna Carta Weekend, on 13 June the University of Lincoln and Lincoln BIG hosted the Freedom Festival.  Then on Sunday (14 June) at Lincoln Castle was the launch of a digital platform 1215.Today exploring the global significance of the Magna Carta through Art.  It is a 2-year collaborative initiative led by the University of Lincoln with regional art organisations, schools, businesses, City and County councils. The Contemporary Lens Media exhibition website is called Quadrivium.

Looking China 2014 | Global Filmmaking Project by Uni Students

LookingChina_2014LogoFour of our graduating students, and two students from Cardiff University, along with the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media’s Senior Lecturer Marcella Forster undertook a 16-day filmmaking project in Dalian called Looking China 2014. Its aim was to enhance cultural communication between China and the rest of the world through the art of film.  Soon-to-be Class of 2014 Ash Wilks, Tom McKie, Luke Winter and Alex Whitcombe worked as media producers with fellow student filmmakers from universities in China, America, Australia, India, Singapore, South Korea and France.  

Participating students produced 10-minute films, which were screened at an exclusive ceremony earlier this month. Now the shorts will be shown accross China and worldwide from the USA to the UK. Marcella outlined our students’ short films: Tom displayed to us the architectural heritage and splendour of the city; Alex’s study of the spiritual focus in Dalian’s physical activities introduced us to some captivating characters; Luke captured the young people of Dalian and the fascinating phenomenon of Lightning Play; and you can see Ash’s film here, which brought home to us the care that Dalian workers put into their jobs and the pleasure they derive from them. 1000+ days later… Rachel Hagreen on life after LSM & University

Rachael-Hagreen_UpdatedPicWell, that’s it. Somehow three years (or roughly 1018 days) have just passed and University has officially finished with me. The past year has been the best of my life so far, and that is purely down to genuinely loving the course (even the dissertation) and meeting a cracking set of friends following the University trip to Latvia back in October.

As much as I don’t want to leave University life, I now feel completely ready to move on to whatever’s next. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work on a lot of extra projects (paid and unpaid) during my three years in Lincoln and those are the things that have really given me the confidence that I have now. Whether you’re going into your first or second year, or even final year I can’t express enough how important it is to get that extra bit of experience. The course is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but there’s going to be a couple of hundred people graduate with the same degree as you in ONE year from that ONE course in Lincoln alone. It’s no secret that jobs are hard to come by in this industry but if you do something extra on the side that will set you apart from those hundreds of other people in the same position as you, it’ll really make a difference when you leave. ‘Picture Post’ superb archive collection for students and staff

Picture Post - 19.04.47Iconic archive of photo-journalistic magazines will support research for students and staff at the University of Lincoln. The library team won a bid to completely house the collection of Picture Post, which is one of Britain’s most significant war-time publications. Lincoln School of Media Principal Lecturer Colin Reiners: “Our collection consists of every copy of Picture Post ever published, offering students direct access to material covering the social history of Britain between 1938 and 1957.”  Lizzy Mitchell from the University Press Office shared the good news:

The collection, which consists of almost 50,000 pages, was gifted by the family of a local collector, whose affection for the publication saw him amass and preserve each individual copy of the magazine. It will now be stored in the University of Lincoln’s Zibby Garnett Library for special archive materials, overseen by the University’s Academic Subject Librarian, Dr Frederick Dickinson. Update: Media Culture 2020 European Programme

MC2020_Latvia_NewYear2013Find out what 9 Lincoln School of Media students and 2 lecturers got up to in Latvia when they completed the 2nd edition of Media Culture 2020.  It is an innovative EU-funded programme designed to explore new modes of collaborative teaching & learning. Here’s an update from LSM’s Martyn Thayne and Graham Cooper:

The main objective of the Erasmus Intensive Programme was to break down classroom and campus walls by creating an open learning environment, where students from different countries and fields could explore and learn together. The multi-disciplinary project featured five universities from across Europe, including Lincoln, the University of Vic (Spain/Catalonia), Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Liepaja University (Latvia), and HKU Hilversum (Netherlands). In addition to the delivery of a number of interactive, online workshops, the project culminated in a two-week intensive programme hosted by Liepaja University, Latvia.

From Third Years to Freshers – Our Advice

Rachel HagreenHello! I’m Rachel Hagreen, a third year Media Production student. This is my first official post as a LSM student blogger, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to hand out a few pieces of advice for first year students studying Media Production or Film and TV, although the advice will almost certainly be useful for any student!

Two years ago if somebody had offered me advice I wouldn’t have bothered reading it because if we’re being totally honest all we care about this week is being a fresher and we tend to put our courses to the back of our mind at least for the first week but here’s my first piece of advice: read this list of advice from fellow third year students and try and take it all in!
