During a normal working week here at Butchers Hook Video, I’ve come to expect at least a dozen CV’s of young people interested in breaking into the film business in the UK.
Now it is widely known that getting a break in the business is difficult, so in this article I’ll attempt to address this and offer some tips I’ve picked up along my career from lowly runner to corporate video producer working with Fortune 500 companies.

Hi there, Daz Scales here from Backyard Productions, a fan film group from the UK. I also graduated with Masters in Media Production thanks to the University of Lincoln.
You might be interested to know that I am producing a series of video diaries of the production process. As well as detailing the progress I also pass on my ‘wisdom’ of making films for free (well almost free).
Plenty of people leave university with a decent degree, but it’s the people who have more than that who will get the jobs that are so in demand.

LSM student Hannah Cook has just completed a six-week work placement in London with The Bureau Film Company working on “The Comedian”, a feature film debut by writer/director Tom Shkolnik starring Edward Hogg.
Still a vexed question it seems. Internships are a great way to get your foot in the door, but should anyone work for nothing in this day and age?
I have belatedly come across a report on the subject issued last year by the CIPD; it might interest both graduates and students.
