Short ‘Sir Joseph Banks – Endeavour’ with David Attenborough

David-Attenborough_RedDogFilmPhil Stevens, LSM’s 2010 graduate and one of our media mentors, is a film director & co-runs Red Dog Film with another LSM 2010 alumnus Sam Wardhan.  Red Dog Film said “we were lucky enough to be able to record a short interview with Sir David Attenborough when he came to Lincoln to open the Sir Joseph Banks exhibition at The Collection on 14th February. The interview will form part of the interactive website & film that the company is making with StrikeMedia, funded in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund.” The short called ‘Sir Joseph Banks – Endeavour’ had LSM graduates, students and staff (see credits below) working on it. The film’s about the life and legacy of the British botanist, explorer, naturalist and High Sheriff of Lincolnshire who has been hailed as ‘one of the great men of his age’. According to the Natural History Museum, Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was long-time President of The Royal Society who “steered the course of British science for the first part of the 19th century”.  In honour of Banks, the University of Lincoln will be re-naming a building, as part of its Science and Innovation park development, the ‘Joseph Banks Laboratories‘. The filmmakers describe their short doco as a ‘unique insight into the journey of one of science’s greatest unsung heroes’. Update: Media Culture 2020 European Programme

MC2020_Latvia_NewYear2013Find out what 9 Lincoln School of Media students and 2 lecturers got up to in Latvia when they completed the 2nd edition of Media Culture 2020.  It is an innovative EU-funded programme designed to explore new modes of collaborative teaching & learning. Here’s an update from LSM’s Martyn Thayne and Graham Cooper:

The main objective of the Erasmus Intensive Programme was to break down classroom and campus walls by creating an open learning environment, where students from different countries and fields could explore and learn together. The multi-disciplinary project featured five universities from across Europe, including Lincoln, the University of Vic (Spain/Catalonia), Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Liepaja University (Latvia), and HKU Hilversum (Netherlands). In addition to the delivery of a number of interactive, online workshops, the project culminated in a two-week intensive programme hosted by Liepaja University, Latvia.

Voluntary Work Opportunity – Short Doco for soundLINCS

soundLINCS_B15Can you help to create a short documentary for soundLINCS to capture its B15 event, which’ll celebrate 15 years of community music and try to break a World Record on 3rd May 2014? soundLINCS is a not-for-profit community music group and organisers said: “The event will see 1500 musicians come together to play a brand new piece of music and attempt to break a world record and we hope that this opportunity could give the volunteers some great experience and footage for their showreel, as well as a chance to be a part of this unique day. We would like a team (or individual) who could film the rehearsals during the day and interview the musicians, composers and volunteers. There may also be the chance to film at some of the smaller group rehearsals, but dates of these are still to be confirmed. Own equipment would be an advantage as we’re very limited in what we could provide.” If you’re interested in this opportunity please email your contact details and CV to hannah@soundlincs.org

For more information on B15 or to register to be one of 1500 musicians, visit soundLINCS

Graduate Michael Henry on his first day shoot on ‘Time and Place’

Michael henry_dayone_time&placeLSM’s 2009 alumnus and indie film-maker Michael Henry’s been shooting ‘TIME AND PLACE’ this week. He said: “the footage is looking great so far. We’ve really upped our visual game and I cannot wait to show everyone the finished film.” He’s been reflecting on day one’s shoot:

It was an unusual change of pace for us, as we usually film so swiftly. We decided before the shoot to take our time and really push the visual quality of the film. Spending longer (it took an hour and a half to shoot one shot) on each take. and scene, has made the shoot a little less enjoyable than other productions we’ve worked together on. Perhaps it’s because we’ve only really shot parts which emphasise the serious tone so far, or perhaps I need to cheer up, be more patient and enjoy the small moments as they come. One thing’s for sure, we are all looking forward to getting stuck into the more dialogue-heavy, meatier scenes as opposed to the shot-to-shot moments we’ve done so far. Continue reading
