Nicholas Parsons CBE | University of Lincoln Honorary Doctorate

NicholasParsons_SBHave you got just a minute? With a busy time at the Lincoln School of Media, it’s nice to take time to reflect over the Bank Holiday. So we thought it’d be lovely to share LSM’s collection on broadcast legend Nicholas Parsons CBE. This month he gave a talk at the ‘Great Minds’ Lecture, which was in association with LSM, about The English Language and the Spoken Word.

Senior Lecturer, Dylan Roys: Anyone get a picture of his shoes? … wow I want some like that.

Henry-WillmottSenior Lecturer, Chris Hainstock: we had a great talk by Nicholas Parsons CBE. Big thanks to soon-to-be-graduates Henry Willmot & Kamil Rewers for filming before and after the event, Mr P preferred the talk to be ‘live’ only so the lucky ones inside got to hear his witty and thought provoking tales. Who knew he spent 5 years as an apprentice engineer on the Clyde in Glasgow?!  Continue reading

BBC’s 1st OB recreated by LSM, Locals, a Violinist & Nightingale!

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of BBC radio, LSM Senior Lecturer in audio production David McSherry shares this sound story.

DylanRoys-and-JanetWelsh_18may2014-at-18.34.1490 years ago today on the 19th May, the BBC transmitted its very first outside broadcast and the stars of the show were cellist Beatrice Harrison accompanied by a very tuneful nightingale. To celebrate the anniversary, Senior Lecturer in radio and sound Dylan Roys and I accepted the challenge from Reverend Mark Holden (Wragby parishes) to recreate the historic event in Lincolnshire.

Violinist Janet Welsh kindly agreed to join us in this quest and we headed off to Whisby Nature Reserve to recruit a willing nightingale to our band. As dusk fell, Graham, our expert guide and one of Whisby’s wardens, attuned our ears to the song of the nightingale amongst the many other voices of blackcap, whitethroat and robin.  LISTEN to ‘The Violin and The Nightingale’ hereContinue reading

Backyard Productions ‘The Drift Trailer’ by LSM Grads & Students

Darren Scales has produced a video diaryLSM’s 2008 alumnus Director and Producer Darren Scales (and a part-time lecturer at the School) tells us about his latest venture at Backyard Productions UK. Apparently the project was done on a budget of £5,000 with goodwill from a bunch of local and media volunteers!

The Drift Trailer HD “is an original sci-fi trailer made by LSM graduates and undergrads. We have really gone all out to make this a massive movie with a micro-budget! That is the biggest challenge: creating an original story with that immersive movie look with next to no funding – but I think we have done it. Now in the post-production phase, I have no doubt that THE DRIFT (set 100 years from now) is going to be something really special. The movie will be out at the end of the year.”

You can make donations towards ‘The Drift’ movie at Backyard Productions, which is a voluntary group.  Details are on its site.

Be part of ‘The Banks Endeavour’ film project – IndieGoGo

Sir JosephBanks-Endeavour_IndieGoGo_May2014LSM Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock has an update about ‘The Banks Endeavour’ to bring Sir Joseph Banks to life in film.  The project is spearheaded by our 2010 graduates, Philip Stevens and Sam Wardhan, at Red Dog Film and its crowdfunding campaign to raise £100,000 starts TODAY!  Red Dog Film: “Our Joseph Banks film will tell the story of this remarkable Lincolnshire man who was the President of the Royal Society for more than 40 years, who took part on the famous first European voyage to Australia with Captain Cook and was the most pre-eminent British scientist of the late eighteenth century, but who remains relatively unknown in the UK today.  We really appreciate your interest in our film project, and we would like to invite you to become part of this exciting opportunity to tell this extraordinary man’s extraordinary story, you can find out more here.  Chris said:

A private event hosted by the Sir Joseph Banks Society at The Collection this evening marked the end of the exhibition that Sir David Attenborough opened back in February.  The team behind the film along with the Sir Joseph Banks Society launched the crowd funding campaign for the Banks Endeavour project tonight. With Sir David Attenborough and other respected experts, the film will be a ‘featured’ IndieGoGo project, and this fundraising site has started promoting it already.  I have now edited a short fund-raising film, to support the project:

Mentoring Pilot at LSM

Our media mentoring is an initiative between the Lincoln School of Media and the University of Lincoln Careers & Employability Service. The mentoring pilot is part of our successful LSM Network, which you probably know created this blog and started ‘Meet the Graduates’ to name just a couple of things managed by the network. The LSM has always been keen for our alumni to be part of our activities and events. The media mentoring pilot is another strand to enhance our link between industry and academia as we celebrate twenty years of media students into graduates. Thanks to all our mentors, majority of the twenty or so are our alumni, and student-mentees. We’re looking forward to hearing how the mentoring is going, so please share your experiences here! We’ll be reviewing the pilot’s progress later in the year. Our media mentoring was launched the morning of Meet the Graduates in February 2014.  LSM’s student crew, via New Media Lincs was Year 2 Rory McCarney, Year 3 Kirsty Gibson and Kamil Rewers, captured this summary about our mentoring pilot.
