Aleysha Minns, Class of 2013 | Website | Film, TV & Photography

Aleysha-Minns_20142013 graduate and freelancer Aleysha Minns, who is one of our inspiring LSFM mentors, is now officially self-employed and said: My website is finally live! What a long and interesting journey it has been. I think the mistake I made was starting to set it up too early, I was at a point were my work was still based around my student work and I was only just beginning my freelance career. I am still in the starting stages, but at least I have some credited work. Thank you very much to my web designer/developer Sam Kelham for putting up with me all this time. I definitely recommend him if you need anything like this done and can visit his website here.

This video is a showcase of some of my most recent work including work with Channel 4 and FyreUK. It shows my skills in a range of areas such as Production Management, Camera Operator, Producer and Director over different genres.

Alex O’Brien, Class of 2014 | Audio Production Freelancer

Alex-O'Brien_APClass-of-2014My name is Alex and I am going to be graduating in Audio Production in September 2014. Since finishing university in May I’ve found out I will be graduating with First Class Honours. I never thought I was capable of achieving this. It has given me so much confidence in my abilities and I cannot thank the amazing LSM staff enough.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have a job interview at Shepperton Studios for the position of trainee sound assistant and it was an amazing experience. I met some incredible people who had done the sound on some of my favourite films and saw industry standard studios in action. The whole experience has kept me inspired and has given me more drive to carry on working towards my goal to work in the creative industry.

I’ve also managed to get a job in my hometown. Continue reading

Richard McCormack, Class of 2009 | Red Bee Media’s BBC Four Doco

RedBeeMedia_logoI’m a graduate of 2009 and I work as a creative for Red Bee Media. It makes content, promos and designs branding for a range of clients. However Red Bee is probably most well known in the industry as being the BBC’s creative agency. You know the swimming hippos on BBC1? Red Bee did that. However this post isn’t so much about me; rather it’s about my creative director, his co-producer and a ten year project. It turned into a documentary ‘100 seconds to beat the world: The David Rudisha Story’, which is a co-production with Hill Ten film. The doco will be on-air 22 July at 10pm on BBC Four. Here’s the trail.

A decade ago Jim and Ed set out to make a documentary about Brother Colm, an enigmatic Irish teacher who has also coached many of Kenya’s most celebrated athletics including Wilson Kipketer, Matthew Birir and Peter Rono. Jim and Ed wanted to discover why a man without any professional training or athletic experience had managed to consistently develop gold medal winning athletes. However on 9th August 2012 the subject of the documentary changed, when David Rudisha ran the fastest 800 metres in history and took gold at the London Olympics. Jim and Edward looked back at their rushes and realised they had a range of footage and stills of David as a shy teenager developing into an athlete. So the documentary was refocused on David.

I came on board over the last year or so when Jim asked me to film an interview with Lord Seb Coe for the documentary. One bleak Tuesday morning, I met Jim outside Coe’s offices in Victoria armed with a Canon 5D, a Canon XF305 and a bed sheet for a backdrop (which Jim had spent thirty minutes the night before ironing). Class of 2012, Samuel Cox | Creative Technologist

Samuel-Cox_MAGraduateI’m currently working for a creative technology company called rehabstudio as a creative technologist … funnily enough! It basically means that I generate concepts, ideas and prototypes for brands such as Google, Converse and Red Bull, as well as internal R&D.  I usually focus on building and engineering physical objects/things that are also digital in some way (similar to the phrase “internet of things” that’s getting pasted around at the minute).  I also make this kind of stuff in my spare time, like BitTag, which questions our relationship and how we value fiat currency in the physical world when compared with new Cryptocurrencies. This gained the attention of the BBC, live CNBC (pretty nerve racking) Yahoo and Cnet to name a few.

Flood Beacon is my latest project focusing on using technology for good. It is engineered to broadcast live data such the current water level, GPS location and any sudden accelerations the beacon may feel from sudden flooding. Alerts can then be sent to our smartphone application (push notification when someone is in immediate danger), monitoring stations.

And a note on my MA project progress.  Continue reading

Class of 2009, Michael Henry | ‘Time and Place’ Trailer

Michael Henry_2009GradPassionate filmmaker Michael Henry set up Quandary Productions. He said members of the indie production team strive to make both short and feature films of a professional quality, on the slimmest of budgets.” The latest ‘low budget epic film’ is called a Time and Place, which is due to be screened in October 2014.  In the meantime, Mike said you can see the official trailer:

We’ve finally been able to release the Official Trailer to the film, which we feel captures the tone of the intense dramatic moments and the surreal comedic moments. So far, feedback is looking great, with a lot of people eager to watch the film upon release.

‘TIME AND PLACE’ is our fifth feature film. Having crowdfunded nine months ago, shooting wrapped in March this year, and we are currently working on Post-Production. Continue reading

Video Update | Lincoln School of Media’s HEADSPACE

Headspace_LSM2014 This is a video update on ‘Headspace‘, the Lincoln School of Media’s radio and audio social networking event.  It was successfully organised by Senior Lecturer Zara Healy back in April. The idea was connecting like-minded people on-campus. The networking was between LSM students and industry professionals – some our alumni – from presenters to podcasters. Headspace achieved its aim by providing a great opportunity for 100 participants to chat about any aspect of careers and to build new contacts. This video was created courtesy of two LSM media production students Rory McCarney and Scott Williams at New Media Lincs Social Enterprise.

Class of 2010, Jack Shelbourn | Freelance DoP

Jack-Shelbourn_mid-cameraI studied my MA in Media Production between September 2009 and September 2010. I graduated in 2011 with a Distinction. Since then I have moved into a career as a Director of Photography. I’m very excited that HIDEAWAY, which is a new short film (written by Gabriel Henrique Gonzalez) that I shot and co- produced, has been selected for the No Gloss Film Festival in Leeds.

Another short film, FRAMEd (shot in Italy and London) was recently nominated for Best Short at the London Independent Film Festival. Continue reading

Promo for Romantic Comedy Film ‘What Goes Up’ by LSM Students

An update from LSM’s student Hannah Skidmore who is the Producer at GSProductions.  It’s an indie made up of a student team. The production’s making the feature length rom-com ‘What Goes Up’ film:

MatthewGambell_What_Goes_Up_LOGO

“The official trailer for GSProductions first feature film has been released. Pre-production began in May 2013 with a team of just under 20 people working to promote the project and raise funds via an IndieGoGo campaign. After meeting their goal of just over £3,500, they were able to hire and shoot on a RED One digital camera, allowing for full cinematic scale, as well as receiving merchandise and the legal rights for the products used throughout the film, such as Rubik’s from Seven Towns Ltd. An original score is also being created for the film by Vincent Walker of Suburban Legends, which really brings the film to life. The film was shot in just over three weeks in July 2013 and is now nearing the end of production, with the final stages of post-production currently underway, with hopes to release the film at the end of September 2014.”
