LSM Students in Latvia for Media Culture 2020

MC2020Project_AndrewWest_26Oct13Ten of our final year undergraduates are in Latvia for the second stage of the EU-funded Media Culture 2020 project.  It aims to “break classroom and campus walls by creating open virtual learning environments where students from different countries and fields can explore and learn together.”

MC2020Project_Intro_AndrewWest_27Oct13LSM third years have joined students from Finland, Spain and the Netherlands for two weeks of hard work and cultural exploration. Lecturer Martyn Thayne is with them for the first week and Senior Lecturer Graham Cooper will go out for the second week. Our 3rd year student Andrew West captured the moment when they landed at Riga airport on Saturday and their first introduction session was yesterday. He said: “it all sounds really exciting, I’ll keep you updated! Watch this video to find out what it’s all about.” Continue reading

Opportunities: Design an NHS App and a Poster for New Media Lincs

Hazel DonnellyCall out for creatives from Hazel Donnelly at New Media Lincs. It’s the LSM’s social enterprise initiative, which links students with businesses and arts & crafts organisations to provide creative media solutions.  Hazel sums up the latest opportunities for students:

Can you design a mobile app for the NHS to promote Family and Healthy Lifestyle services? This is an exciting project with immense potential. Open to Year 2 and Year 3 students.

Our fledgling business New Media Lincs requires a poster made to promote our services to students. The poster will be used for the Careers Fair this year at the university and for subsequent promotional opportunities.

If you’re interested, please email Hazel: hdonnelly@lincoln.ac.uk

Radio Legend Trevor Dann is at LSM

Trevor DannVisiting Professor Trevor Dann is at the Lincoln School of Media today. He’ll be on campus over the next couple of days and said, modestly, there’ll be “lots of radio folks who know more than I do!” Trevor will be “leading talks, workshops, debates and offering tons of practical advice” said Head of LSM Sarah Barrow: “If you see him around campus, go and have a chat! Tell him you’re part of LSM and he’ll be interested to hear about your projects and plans.”

Good opportunity to meet a radio legend – er, Trevor’s also a Notts County supporter!

Pictured with actor Mark Williams at RTS Midlands awards on 17 Oct 2013.                                                                       A fantastic achievement for the LSM.  Our creative undergraduates won the RTS Midlands Student Award in the Entertainment category.

group table small‘Dead Swan’ is a comedy fiction by final students, which was made as a second year project – this is a particularly fine achievement because it’s rare that 2nd year student work is nominated by the RTS. The award winning film was made by undergraduates: Thomas McKie, Marc Piper, Aidan Barker-Dean, Alex Whitcombe, Bethany Hoggarth-Hall. The tutor was Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock.

3rd Year Aidan: “It was an honour just to be considered for nomination so to have actually won in our category is amazing. We’re still having a little trouble believing it has actually happened!”  See the moment when they won … Continue reading

Award Winning Andrew West: Update from the Houses of Parliament

Andrew West copyright 2012

Winning the ICS photography competition and having my photography exhibited at the Houses of Parliament was a bonus! Travelling to Honduras and working with the human rights organisation Jóvenes Liderando Cambios and Progressio as part of the ICS scheme was fantastic, in 3 months I gained so much experience.

It was great to get the chance to explain more about my experiences to MPs. Presenting our work in the Houses of Parliament felt like a great achievement.  Here’s a short teaser I produced and an extract from my speech on 8th October 2013:  Continue reading

BBC work experience placements. Plus advice from our graduates.

The BBC is taking applications for work experience placements this November and December. Deadline’s 14th October. The beeb highlights that “you will only be able to apply for one Work Experience category – TV, Radio, Online or Business and Support. There is no separate category for online work, but all categories offer placements that have a strong interactive element. When you choose your category and fill in your online application, we’ll ask you some questions about what interests you and where in the UK you want to be based. If you are successful, we’ll do our best to match you to a placement that’s right for you.” Find out what you can expect and how to apply, by clicking here.

At Meet the Graduates 2013 here’s what our alumni said about how you can try to get work experience. Produced by LSM’s third year student blogger Rachel Hagreen, with camera crew Tom Anderson and Andrew West.

From Third Years to Freshers – Our Advice

Rachel HagreenHello! I’m Rachel Hagreen, a third year Media Production student. This is my first official post as a LSM student blogger, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to hand out a few pieces of advice for first year students studying Media Production or Film and TV, although the advice will almost certainly be useful for any student!

Two years ago if somebody had offered me advice I wouldn’t have bothered reading it because if we’re being totally honest all we care about this week is being a fresher and we tend to put our courses to the back of our mind at least for the first week but here’s my first piece of advice: read this list of advice from fellow third year students and try and take it all in!
