Douglas M. Worth, LSFM Student | Review on RTS Masterclasses
I’m a Year 2 Student
The Royal Television Society (RTS), an educational charity promoting the arts and science of television, held another series of its student masterclasses on the 14th and 15th November 2016. The first was all about television programming, covering drama, documentaries, journalism and entertainment. In an interview style talk, each speaker would answer questions about their careers, with clips of their work intersected and with an occasional audience Q&A.
First to speak was BAFTA award winner writer/director Sally Wainwright, known for her 2014 drama series Happy Valley. One of the main points in her talk was less is more, an example of this was the end of episode four where the main character has a brutal fight scene, she states part of this was cut as it appeared too violent but it still had the same impact, especially when they decided not to have the end music but the police emergency radio tone through the credits which had previously appeared in the series when an officer was attacked and killed. Jo Ashman, Class of 2002 | Freelance TV Producer/Director
It seems almost unbelievable to me, that’s it’s been around 15 years since I graduated from Lincoln. 15 years was once an impossibly long time frame, and being 35 … well let’s face it, who wants to think about being in their mid-thirties when they’ve just graduated?! Well I can honestly say, now I’m here, I’m loving it. I’m currently a freelance producer / director, based in Bristol, doing the job of my dreams.
I just about scraped a 2:1 degree, BA (Hons) in Media Production. We were the first graduates to do the course and have University of Lincoln on our certificates. I knew it would be tough to break into the industry, and I think I sent my CV to almost any company I could find. In those early months I did my fair share of work experience and runner jobs, just to get any experience under my belt. But for me, I desperately wanted to go into wildlife filmmaking, and to do that was going to be even harder. Several conversations had left me under no illusions that the only people who were successful in this field, were those with a scientific degree, not media… I was getting frustrated and despondent by the whole system, so when a friend called to say he was going to trek to Everest Base Camp, I jumped at the chance to join him, and spent the next few months travelling across Central Asia and Russia. I’d recommend time out travelling alone or with friends to anyone, it certainly gave me the time to really evaluate what I wanted. Strangely it also taught me to trust my instincts, and that’s something I still completely rely on in my job today, particularly in stressful filming situations. Continue reading
Alison Oxborrow & Patrick Collins, Class of 2015 | Ethel & Ernest
Our 2015 BA (Hons) Animation alumni Alison Oxborrow and Patrick Collins were part of the creative team at Lupus Films on Ethel & Ernest (2016), which is the production company’s first feature film. The hand-drawn animated film is a true love story based on the book about his parents by author and illustrator Raymond Briggs (creator of The Snowman). Last month, the Ethel & Ernest film was premièred at the BFI London Film Festival 2016 and released in UK cinemas this month.
Alison and Patrick met the film’s Animation Director Peter Dodd and Head of Assistant Animation Denise Dean during their degree course at the University of Lincoln. Patrick said: I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t studied animation in Lincoln. As well as learning about form, construction and animation technique I met some great people who actually work in the industry. When I saw that Denise was looking for assistant animators to work on the film, I jumped at the chance. Read the news story by the University of Lincoln press office.

Rosie Turner, Class of 2015 | BBC CBeebies Content Producer
Hello! I’m Rosie and I graduated in 2015 with a BA (Hons) in Media Production. I work for BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC as a Content Producer for CBeebies. My role involves managing the social media for pre school shows Hey Duggee, Go Jetters and Sarah & Duck. As an online producer my role could be anything from coming up with new ideas for videos to promote magazines and toys to collaborating with the Children’s department in Manchester, attending brand partner meetings and even researching Christmas cakes designs!
I’m really excited to have joined the BBC after working for 18 months at a social media agency in East London on projects for Red Bull, MTV and CBBC. This role has allowed me to use the skills I’ve already gained in Children’s television to create exciting and inspirational content for families, parents/guardians and teachers! In my last year of university I wrote my dissertation on ‘Bringing The Children Out To Play’ a study on the relationship between Children’s online/broadcast media and the outdoors. I love spending time in nature and in my spare time I’ve been working on my own project called ‘The Urban Backpacker.’ Continue reading

Aleysha Minns, Class of 2013 | Pinewood Studios & BAFTA Crew
As September has come and gone again, seeing my 3rd LSFM media mentee with her graduation photos, it just reminds me of how long ago 2013 feels. The past 3 years have been a bit of a rollercoaster, with the past 12 months being some of the most difficult but incredible of my career so far.
The last half of 2015 was tough, finding work was a nightmare and I was ready to give up on the whole thing. That was until February of this year, when I got to live out my childhood dream of working at Pinewood Studios on my first big budget film, taking the leap from Production to the Locations/Studio department as a trainee. Confidentiality surrounding these types of films mean I can’t say anything about it until release, but I spent up until August there and has been the lift that I needed. Since then I’ve been working on commercials and have been accepted into BAFTA Crew 2016, which is a huge honour and made it on to the list on my 2nd attempt. To top off the year, Beautiful Devils (2015) premièred at Cannes Film Festival to a great reception and my first ever film credit on ID2:Shadwell Army (2016) recently came out in cinemas and DVD. Alumni Q&A session | LSFM Creative Enterprise module
Love our graduates back on-campus to share experiences and connect with our students from our annual network event Meet the Graduates (2nd November 2016) to teaching modules. TODAY half a dozen alumni will join our final year students in the Creative Enterprise session and module co-ordinator Zara Healy said: we welcome 6 of our graduates who are all working in multimedia roles. They have all graduated within the last 5 years from LSFM – some are freelance, some are employed full-time and at least 3 have set up their own creative industry companies. The one and a half hour session will be a Question and Answer about how this module’s assessment – pitch and paperwork – has helped graduates in their own pitches, how to develop ideas and present them to help them in their roles in the Media industry.
Gemma Lowe | Class of 2012 & LSFM Industry Mentor: I currently work as Press and Media Content Officer for the Lincoln College Group, producing multimedia and written content for a wide range of marketing purposes and managing digital communication projects and social media across Lincoln, Newark and Gainsborough Colleges.
