Having had some previous success with some of my short films (BFI awarded, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival) and recently completing the FilmWorks development and networking scheme through the BFI and Creative England has enabled me to move forward into directing my first feature project. Since I graduated in 2010, I have been working as a Broadcast Assistant at BBC Radio Nottingham.
Level 3 student Katie Harris responded to a call for applicants to work as runners on Dragon’s Den, but wound up working last summer on BBC2 programme The Planners, due to be aired on Thursday 31st January at 8pm (Northern Ireland only!) If you can, watch out for her runner credit.

Recent LSM graduates, Warren Hayward, James Martin, Gideon Marriott and Leanne Bacon had some valuable work experience contributing to the post production of ‘The Forty’, a film made by Lecturer Dan Frodsham. The film charts the painstaking work of conserving an exquisite Renaissance fresco in Famagusta, Cyprus. Dan sent us an update on the film’s success:

I did wonder why LSM graduate Jordan Livermore left his first job in 3D film, to launch himself as a runner. I‘m beginning to understand now, having gone along to “Meet the Freelancers”, an event suggested and organised by Jordan, hosted by the LSM.
Jordan’s idea was to pass on the wisdom and experiences of fellow freelancers Nick Cramp, James Gurden, Jude Winstanley and Andy Devonshire, as well as to give his own take on the business. Together they did just that. Jordan started with this:
“…apply for absolutely every realistic entry level opportunity that there is out there, because you never know who you will meet and where it will lead to, even if it is as little as making the director a cup of coffee and sweeping the floor.”
Since leaving Uni I have spent time gaining short term experience at different companies around the UK. I worked with companies local to the uni such as Blueprint Films and Darren Scales’ Backyard Productions, both of which were brilliant opportunities and helped me to learn a great deal about the industry.
