Congrats to LSM’s Graduate Gemma Pass, Class of 2013

Hi, just wanted to share a few things! My name’s Gemma Pass and I graduated in 2013. When leaving university I so had just one thing in my head – getting into media production. And now after working in the media for 6 months I think it’s so important that current LSM students realise that there is so much more to the media than just production!

After leaving Lincoln I picked up a few runner day jobs and absolutely loved my time working on shows. But between that time I was miserable. It’s so hard to pick up long term contracts without some more permanent experience under my belt and worst of all I couldn’t afford to move to London without a guarantee that long term work was there to pay my rent. It was then that I came across a job as a Junior Scheduler near London. It wasn’t as glamorous as production work but hey it was a foot in the door. Now 6 months down the line I know I made the right choice. Since starting in August I have launched several TV channels, created promos for TV, designed channel logos and had complete editorial decisions on what plays out on air. Media Graduate & Freelance Cameraman Daniel Bowring

2009 Media Technology alumnus Daniel Bowring works as a freelance camera operator and assistant for productions working with Bear Grylls to Freddie Flintoff. He feels that working as a runner laid the foundations for his future career: “You really have to be prepared to start at the bottom in this industry, I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to be a cameraman to start off working in a camera facilities company. You’ll learn a lot and they’ll still keep hiring you freelance after you’ve left.” The University’s alumni team caught up with Dan about flying the world:

Daniel’s work has recently been featured on the ‘Mountains’ episode of Bear Grylls’ Escape From Hell, where he filmed the survival expert perform stunts and survival techniques across the Dolomites mountain range in north-eastern Italy. He said: “It was great filming. Bear’s a really nice guy. It’s a lot of pressure though, he wouldn’t particularly want to jump down a Mountain into icy water more than once so, you really had to try to get everything perfect on the first take.” Continue reading →

Meet LSM Graduate: Indie filmmaker Mike Henry, Class of 2009

Currently shooting ‘Time and Place’ and here’s an extract from Quandary Productions online journal, which Mike posted yesterday (and he’ll be at LSM for our new Mentoring pilot and ‘Meet the Graduates‘ THIS Wednesday):

We’ve passed the half way point of the film now and it looks like the only major problem we could have with upcoming shoot dates is the weather. Our eleventh day was a bit of an odd one (even by our standards). We started off by shooting a quick few shots, which required Shaun Woodgates to cover his face in flour and lie face down in a field (he’s an incredibly dedicated chap so we knew we could rely on him). After laying, surrounded by several mounds of horse dung (and battling the extreme wind), we headed to Charles Cromwell’s house to finish off his remaining scenes. Continue reading …

Hello. I’m an Assistant Producer on the third series of Gadget Man – very chuffed indeed! I keep meaning to write a blog post, but work is relentless at the moment.

This is me “working” on Gadget Man in the South of France in the summer looking after the BBQ Donut! See you Wednesday at ‘Meet the Graduates’.

Jordan’s going to be a media mentor for one of our students on LSM’s new mentoring pilot, which’ll be launched on the morning of the 12th Feb. Roll on Wednesday & congrats to Jordan!

Meet LSM Graduate: TV Editor Stuart Lutes, Class of 2001

Stuart Lutes is a freelance TV Editor who’s worked on TV shows from Big Brother to Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe – currently he’s editing Series 2. Stuart’s going to be joining 30 of LSM’s industry alumni at ‘Meet the Graduates’ on 12 Feb and he’ll be one of our new media mentors. Somehow he’s managed to squeeze in a story on our blog, too. Thanks Stu, see you next Wednesday – mentoring, Q&A session and networking … whoa!

In terms of employment hints and tips, I’m happy to talk to the students directly but, it generally boils down to getting a job in any profession. Display a willingness to learn, a willingness to work hard (even for free), show initiative and finally, some level of aptitude. The TV industry can be a cruel beast, with everyone working long hours and usually up against tight deadlines so, ‘dead weight’ or laziness just simply won’t be tolerated. On the flipside, if you can demonstrate an ability to listen, carry out instructions accurately and efficiently, be personable and have a tough skin, you’ll be highly valued, employable and most importantly, trusted and you’ll go very far. So, after graduating in 2001, I was lucky enough to leapfrog the nightmare of being a runner and my career as a Video Editor began down in London three months later … Continue reading →

Rachael White’s post-graduation choice: Travel or Career?

Congrats to our students who’ll be graduating this afternoon – LSM is proud of our alumni. After graduation you’ll have choices and our media grad shared hers:

Travel or career? Choose both! After graduating from the University of Lincoln in 2012 I was in two minds as to what to do next. Travel with friends or start my media career? I had somehow got an interview for a Disney Channel internship and decided if I got it I would stay, if I didn’t I would leave. So within a few minutes of the interview, I screwed it up. My mind already flew to Canada and the rest of me followed a few months later.

I spent 10 months there; snowboarding in the mountains, wake surfing on the lake and road-tripping through America. I also got a little job on the side working for a production company who filmed weddings and corporate videos. I wasn’t ready to let go of media totally so I took the opportunity, like Tesco says “every little helps.” As my visa ran out and I blew my money ticking things off my bucket list I decided it was time to come home. I’m not going to lie, I had some really down days after not even getting bar or waitress jobs. I ended up on the dole. However, after a couple of months constantly applying to pretty much everything everywhere I got an interview at a production company down south. Continue reading →

Graduate Michael Henry on his first day shoot on ‘Time and Place’

LSM’s 2009 alumnus and indie film-maker Michael Henry’s been shooting ‘TIME AND PLACE’ this week. He said: “the footage is looking great so far. We’ve really upped our visual game and I cannot wait to show everyone the finished film.” He’s been reflecting on day one’s shoot:

It was an unusual change of pace for us, as we usually film so swiftly. We decided before the shoot to take our time and really push the visual quality of the film. Spending longer (it took an hour and a half to shoot one shot) on each take. and scene, has made the shoot a little less enjoyable than other productions we’ve worked together on. Perhaps it’s because we’ve only really shot parts which emphasise the serious tone so far, or perhaps I need to cheer up, be more patient and enjoy the small moments as they come. One thing’s for sure, we are all looking forward to getting stuck into the more dialogue-heavy, meatier scenes as opposed to the shot-to-shot moments we’ve done so far. Continue reading →
