BBC’s 1st OB recreated by LSM, Locals, a Violinist & Nightingale!

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of BBC radio, LSM Senior Lecturer in audio production David McSherry shares this sound story.

DylanRoys-and-JanetWelsh_18may2014-at-18.34.1490 years ago today on the 19th May, the BBC transmitted its very first outside broadcast and the stars of the show were cellist Beatrice Harrison accompanied by a very tuneful nightingale. To celebrate the anniversary, Senior Lecturer in radio and sound Dylan Roys and I accepted the challenge from Reverend Mark Holden (Wragby parishes) to recreate the historic event in Lincolnshire.

Violinist Janet Welsh kindly agreed to join us in this quest and we headed off to Whisby Nature Reserve to recruit a willing nightingale to our band. As dusk fell, Graham, our expert guide and one of Whisby’s wardens, attuned our ears to the song of the nightingale amongst the many other voices of blackcap, whitethroat and robin.  LISTEN to ‘The Violin and The Nightingale’ hereContinue reading

Backyard Productions ‘The Drift Trailer’ by LSM Grads & Students

Darren Scales has produced a video diaryLSM’s 2008 alumnus Director and Producer Darren Scales (and a part-time lecturer at the School) tells us about his latest venture at Backyard Productions UK. Apparently the project was done on a budget of £5,000 with goodwill from a bunch of local and media volunteers!

The Drift Trailer HD “is an original sci-fi trailer made by LSM graduates and undergrads. We have really gone all out to make this a massive movie with a micro-budget! That is the biggest challenge: creating an original story with that immersive movie look with next to no funding – but I think we have done it. Now in the post-production phase, I have no doubt that THE DRIFT (set 100 years from now) is going to be something really special. The movie will be out at the end of the year.”

You can make donations towards ‘The Drift’ movie at Backyard Productions, which is a voluntary group.  Details are on its site.

VFX Freelancer Holly Smith, Class of 2010

Holly Smith I graduated from Media Production in 2010 specialising in Digital Media. My first role in the industry was as a Runner at a post house in Soho and whilst working there I showed everyone I could my showreel, most of the time just on my phone in one of the kitchens. This led to one of the VFX editors recommending me to the VFX Company he was working with and I gained a junior position at The Brewery VFX where I have been working up until a few weeks ago when I decided I was going to take the leap to go freelance.

Over the past 2 years at The Brewery VFX I have been constantly learning new skills and gaining invaluable experience working in the industry on both Film & TV projects. I also helped to establish and run the work experience scheme for the company, which gave me the responsibility of reviewing CVs and showreels & interviewing shortlisted candidates. I contacted one of my old lecturers at the beginning of the year because I was tired of seeing the same mistakes made on applicants CVs and showreels and I wanted to be able to offer my advice to students ready for when they graduate. I think it’s so important to have a strong showreel and CV, as often this is the only way you can showcase your skills. Don’t be afraid to get a job as a Runner but make sure you are armed with your showreel or CV ready for any opportunity that might arise. Continue reading
