Meet the Freelancers – a personal view

Follow JordanI did wonder why LSM graduate Jordan Livermore left his first job in 3D film, to launch himself as a runner. I‘m beginning to understand now, having gone along to “Meet the Freelancers”, an event suggested and organised by Jordan, hosted by the LSM.

Andy Smith, class of 2012

While at university I felt it was important to concentrate on my work but also keep my ears down for job opportunities. This is really important in the 3rd year as in a few months you’re not a student any more and you want to get far in an industry relating to the course you’ve been doing for the last three years!

I currently work as a Technical Operator for Satellite Information Services, a company based in both Milton Keynes and MediaCityUK, who broadcast horse and dog racing to betting shops all around the world. They also have the largest outside broadcasting division in the country. Continue reading

Jordan hosts “Meet the Freelancers”

LSM graduate Jordan Livermore presents “MEET THE FREELANCERS”, on Tuesday 11 Dec at 2pm in the Cargill Lecture Theatre.

Jordan has always been keen to put students in the picture about working as a freelancer ever since he began working a a runner in London, so he has organised this event to help current LSM students. They will be able to meet an array of freelancers working in UK TV today and ask them questions about how they got work and how they keep it.

BAFTA survey responders criticise TV careers advice

“A new research report released today by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) reveals that young people are needlessly being discouraged from pursuing a career in film, television or games – with talented young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and women at particular risk of being lost to these industries. Careers in film, television and games are popular first choices amongst young people………  However, one in five (20%) of all respondents found accessing careers advice difficult or impossible, and ……. the majority (64%) felt the advice was too general and almost half (49%) felt the advisor did not know enough about the industry in question.” Continue reading

Take the Fast Train North

This is a free training day for media freelancers in digital, radio & television, to be held in MediaCityUK on Tuesday 20th Nov 2012.

The day is produced in partnership with the BBC Academy and Creative Skillset. Many leading training providers (DV Talent, Indie Training Fund, BECTU, ITV, Futureworks, The Farm, Grand Scheme Media, BBC Writers Room, and others) are coming together to provide a free training day for TV freelancers. To be eligible, you must have been a media professional for a minimum of two years and/or have three broadcast credits to your name and be employed on a short term or freelance contract. You must verify your work history in the mandatory section to be considered for a place.

The day is backed by Pact, Bectu, Broadcast magazine, broadcasters and many independent production companies.
