Backyard Productions ‘The Drift Trailer’ by LSM Grads & Students

Darren Scales has produced a video diaryLSM’s 2008 alumnus Director and Producer Darren Scales (and a part-time lecturer at the School) tells us about his latest venture at Backyard Productions UK. Apparently the project was done on a budget of £5,000 with goodwill from a bunch of local and media volunteers!

The Drift Trailer HD “is an original sci-fi trailer made by LSM graduates and undergrads. We have really gone all out to make this a massive movie with a micro-budget! That is the biggest challenge: creating an original story with that immersive movie look with next to no funding – but I think we have done it. Now in the post-production phase, I have no doubt that THE DRIFT (set 100 years from now) is going to be something really special. The movie will be out at the end of the year.”

You can make donations towards ‘The Drift’ movie at Backyard Productions, which is a voluntary group.  Details are on its site.

Meet the Graduates 2014 | Where Are They Now?

20-years-media-graduates-logoWe’ve a series of clips this week from Meet the Graduates 2014. In the first piece you can find out where some of our alumni are now. Head of Lincoln School of Media, Sarah Barrow, officially introduced MtG 2014. It was a special occasion because it was one of the School’s event to mark 20 years of media at the University of Lincoln.  Meet the Grads was bigger than ever. Over 30 alumni attended (see who we spotted, names are below the video) the networking event between our students and graduates. Many thanks to you all for making, and marking, MtG 2014!

Congrats LSM’s Rosie Turner 4Crew Social Networker & Photographer

LSM’s second year student Rosie Turner is on our mentoring pilot between industry professionals and undergraduates. Rosie’s media mentor is 2006 graduate Katy Atkinson who runs a successful not-for-profit media production company called The Reporters’ Academy, based in Manchester. Next month, Katy has kindly arranged a MediaCityUK tour for Rosie and the two will continue to discuss career strategy. For now, Rosie has this super story to share.

Rosie-TurnerHi, I’m a Television and Photography student. Here’s a little piece on my recent job success at Channel 4.  I’ll be working as a Social Networker and Photographer as part of the 4Crew team, travelling around the UK to film and document 4Talent Days.

I had heard about the job whilst working for the 4Talent department last summer through work experience so when the opportunity was posted online in February I quickly applied and crossed my fingers. At the start of March I had an e-mail back saying I was successful and invited down to London for a day-long interview at Channel 4. After an initial panic because my train was over an hour late and a little jog from one side of Westminster to the other, I made it to the interview, where I met all of the candidates for all job roles (Reporter, Director, Production Manager & Social Networker) within the 4crew team. The first task was a pitch presentation and I was up first! Congrats to LSM’s Graduate Gemma Pass, Class of 2013

Gemma-Pass_2013gradHi, just wanted to share a few things! My name’s Gemma Pass and I graduated in 2013. When leaving university I so had just one thing in my head – getting into media production. And now after working in the media for 6 months I think it’s so important that current LSM students realise that there is so much more to the media than just production!

After leaving Lincoln I picked up a few runner day jobs and absolutely loved my time working on shows. But between that time I was miserable. It’s so hard to pick up long term contracts without some more permanent experience under my belt and worst of all I couldn’t afford to move to London without a guarantee that long term work was there to pay my rent.  It was then that I came across a job as a Junior Scheduler near London. It wasn’t as glamorous as production work but hey it was a foot in the door. Now 6 months down the line I know I made the right choice. Since starting in August I have launched several TV channels, created promos for TV, designed channel logos and had complete editorial decisions on what plays out on air. Now my position with Canis Media is Channel Management and Scheduling Executive. Continue reading
