Stephen Hope, Class of 2012 | BJ, Falkland Islands Television

StephenHope_2012Grad_working-at-BT SportHi. I’m a 2012 Media Production graduate and soon to be a Broadcast Journalist (BJ) in the Falkland Islands. I thought you may be interested in what I’ve been doing since I left the University of Lincoln. I loved my time in Lincoln, and it really shaped the person I am today. I’ve managed to work as a production assistant on a variety of music videos (Jessie J, Tom Odell) before finally falling into a job at Pinewood film studios. [Photo, with mic, is when I was working (PA experience) at BT Sport on Rugby Tonight and we had a segment on rugby players who sing in the locker rooms. I had to give a demonstration (much to my horror) although, I apparently did better than most of the players.]

At Pinewood I worked with a company called Uni-versalEXTRAS Ltd. which casts background extras for major feature films, TV, music videos, advert, etc. I’ve managed to work with a whole range of TV and films productions such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, ‘This is England 90’ and some exciting ones I’m not allowed to mention yet!  My typical day at UniEXTRAS was  Continue reading

Ashley Bryan, Class of 2012 | Multimedia Designer

AshleyBryan-1_2012GradFor the past two years now I’ve been working for a car dealership conglomerate, as a Multimedia Designer. Having studied Media Production at the University of Lincoln, I was quite astounded and pleased to have got into a media job, which is what I have always wanted to do since college (which I also did a Media Production course on).

Personally I felt like having a strong showreel of visual work I made at the University contributed quite a lot to getting the job, and also having a website made it easy for people to get access to my work and see first hand the kind of quality they could expect. My showreel and website can be found at www.ashleybryan.co.uk, which features my professional and personal works ranging from 2D info graphics to fully 3D renders and environments.

Michael Henry, Class of 2009 | Web Series This is Good (2015)

MichaelHenry_ThisIsGood2015_webseriesOur 2009 graduate and independent filmmaker Michael Henry summed up the web series called This is Good  (2015), which was written and directed by Tom Bridger as “the funniest project we’ve all been part of.”  At Quandary Productions Mike was the Producer/DOP on the 7-part series and Tom also runs the Actor Support Scheme at the indie to help actors achieve their goals. One of our recent graduates Liam Gilroy worked as an Intern at Quandary Productions and is the lead actor in episode 5.

This is Good is described as a British comedy web series about people trying to find their definition of being happy.  The series has 7 stories, 7 styles and 7 main characters. Here’s episode 2 called Mike and it features Tom Bridger and stars Michael Henry. Also look out for 2009 alumnus who is a media producer Stuart Almond (he’s the one with toy guns!).  He said the web series “is exactly what the title says it is, Good!  It’s also completely free which is a rare thing.”

You can see the web series at Quandary’s site. From the indie: If you liked it, please share! Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/thisisgoodwebseries  Continue reading

James Ian Gray, Class of 2007 | Cinematographer & DIT

JamesIanGray_ShootingPeopleOur 2007 graduate James Ian Gray calls himself a ‘junior cinematographer’. He has a new site and his blog is a good way to understand what is a DIT and what are LUTs? His industry career started two weeks before he graduated in sound at a television shopping channel. He’s been a runner at the BBC, managed 10 edit suites, worked as a researcher, became a freelancer, camera assisted and is a DIT. This is a must-read story from graduating to working on a BBC doco and film in the last couple of years. He said:  I’m currently working as a DIT on a couple of music videos and art projects. I’ve just finished a Feature Bonded By Blood 2 (2015)  as a DIT.  Here is Jim’s latest showreel and he would like your feedback.

My career started in 2007. Continue reading

Maria Blackstone, Student Work Experience | BBC Good Food Mag

Maria Blackstone_cropped_L3student_March2015I was lucky enough to gain work experience for two weeks with BBC Good Food Magazine. I have always wanted to get a job with BBC Good Food Magazine, ever since my mum started receiving the subscription. My mum taught me to cook at a young age, and it has been something that my passion has grown and grown for. I attended a ten week Junior Chef Academy course at Westminster College when I was younger, and really loved it. I have since set up my food blog where I write up my own recipes and photograph them, channelling my knowledge learnt from my degree course in Contemporary Lens Media (Photography and Video) at LSFM.

The work experience involved me doing desk jobs including sorting through all the newspapers and extracting anything food related, filing, and researching products for their features. I also costed some recipes, which I found really interesting, something that will be useful for me when writing my food blog. However the part that interested me, and excited me most was working in the test kitchen and working on the photoshoots. In the test kitchen I got to test recipes and simply just cook and taste. TheIndieFEST-Film_Awards-logocroppedCongrats to our 2008 graduate, an independent filmmaker and LSFM part-time lecturer Darren Scales for winning an Excellence Award at The IndieFEST Film Awards, in Los Angeles, for The Drift (2014).  Darren aBackyard Productions UK directed and produced the science-fiction feature film, which was made over three years on a low budget of £5,000 and with a high number of willing volunteers (100!).  He said:

Darren-Scales_2008-GradI am so pleased that The Drift has won this award, more so because of the fantastic contribution made by the crew, many of them from the University of Lincoln – at this School.
