Jimmy Gregory, Class of 2006

Things have been rather manic since talking to some of the media students at the Meet the Graduates event earlier this year. For those that weren’t there, I graduated in 2006 and ended up hotfooting it to Leeds in search of a job in the creative industry. I had no industry links as part of my armory and I never had that impeccable sense of timing to be in the right place at the right time.

I applied for post after post, and received my fair share of rejection letters and ultimately resorted to drafting written responses to complaints for one of the UK’s largest car manufacturers in order to pay the rent. Nevertheless I kept applying and after 18 months, I thought that I had caught my break when a local studio decided to take me on. But oh how I was wrong. It didn’t exactly pan out the way it had in my head and within 3 months the dreams were shattered and I was unemployed once more. Continue reading

Aleysha Minns at ITV’s This Morning

I recently underwent some work experience at ITV’s ‘This Morning’. Being an undergraduate student with afternoon lectures, I watched the show everyday and was a huge fan.The process of getting this work experience started in May/June 2012 when I applied for the ITV Talent Pool.

It is a pool of people that, if accepted through an application process followed by a group workshop, are offered work experience, placements and entry-level jobs across ITV around the country. Continue reading

Epix Media double with LSM Interns

LSM’s 2007 graduates Zoe Easey and Will King are co-directors at Epix Media in Lincoln. The creative business has doubled its turnover and its staff. Well done!

Zoe and Will

Senior Web Developer Zoe established the business in 2010.  A year later, Will  joined as a Videographer.  They say the “Uni-factor” has come into play, because the School of Media is where their first employees have come from:

Our creative business Epix Media has crowned a hectic six months by doubling its team where we’ve recruited two interns from the Lincoln School of Media. We’re particularly pleased to have been able to offer internships to ambitious young people who’re keen to work within the highly competitive media sector. Welcome to Stefania Palmisano (MA in Media Production) and Sam Kelham (BA in Media Production).  Continue reading

Nathan Lewis on Audio Production for Animation

From LSM Audio Production Level 2 Student Nathan Lewis:  Earlier this year, an opportunity arose for Audio Production students to collaborate with the final year animation students, who needed an original soundtrack design for their films. With the chance to enhance my learning experience and add to the repertoire of short films for my portfolio, I gladly attended the meeting to pitch my musical stylings to the groups in a rather professional manner (I hoped).

Highlights included the enlisting of my father as “incoherent quip” actor to perform some grunts, screams, oohs and aahs in one of the more acrobatic films. I originally attempted this myself only to rapidly discover my voice being not of the masculine persuasion required of the character.   The two films complete with my composition and sound design are River Man

Meet the LSM Graduates with their Top Tips

Meet the Graduates (MtG) is always a highlight at the Lincoln School of Media.  Katie Martin, class of 2012, captured our alumni at this year’s networking event between graduates and students. Katie’s just finished an internship at the Uni and now she’s landed a staff job here as Social Media Officer – many congrats. This is her vox/pop on tips graduates would give to our third year students. It’s a timely piece as the next generation of our creatives leave the LSM, so listen up and good luck!

Final year students, we look forward to seeing your stories here so please keep us posted on what you’re up to!  Of course you’ll be invited to our next Meet the Graduates, but for now the buzz of this year’s is still with us. Continue reading

MEET LSM’s GRADUATES

Meet the Graduates (MtG) is always a highlight at the Lincoln School of Media and this year’s networking event between graduates and students was no exception. As our third year students are on the verge of graduating (good luck), our alumni were asked what they missed most about being a student? Katie Martin, who graduated last year, captured frank and funny answers from alumni talking about their love of Lincoln and that student lifestyle …

Another Update: LSM’s Radio, Sound & Music Symposium II

This Symposium “was based around the key themes of future directions & opportunities in the radio and music industries” said Organiser and LSM’s Principal Lecturer Bryan Rudd.  The event certainly hit its aims as you’ll see when you read Bryan’s super summary of the day.

SeanSean Strange is a third year student at the Lincoln School of Media.  He found time in the run up to his finals to capture the LSM’s Radio, Sound & Music Symposium II at the start of this month.  See Sean’s images in the slideshow, below. Thanks, Sean!  Another piece to add to your growing portfolio of work perhaps?  Please do keep us posted on how you’re doing when you graduate.

Katie Martin, Class of 2012

Katie MartinHi! I’m Katie, a Media Production graduate. I’m currently working as a Web and Multimedia Intern for the University’s Marketing department…which is definitely not the route I imagined my career taking! Throughout my degree I only ever wanted to go into film, but after finishing my course in May 2012 I was faced with unemployment (or staying in my part-time retail job) along with many other graduates.

I applied for various roles and internships across the country and found my current internship on the University’s job siteIt wasn’t exactly the field I wanted to go into, but it did sound interesting and challenging. Continue reading

Update: Radio, Sound & Music Symposium II

The sun shone today at LSM’s Radio, Sound & Music Symposium II.  Radio experts, creatives and music specialists, including a panel of our graduates working in the industry gave valuable insider knowledge to students.  Having worked in local radio, both ILR and BBC, albeit a while back (before I joined ITV factual) the advice still rang true:  Come up with ideas and say how you’d produce it. Contact people you like to listen to or you fancy a job they’re doing. Look at the range of jobs (not just presentation and news) and target indies, as well as the main industry players.  Don’t turn down freelance work because there’ll be someone else to do it.  Happy days!
