Review: In Conversation with Tomska (11.12.13)

Our 2011 Graduate Tom Ridgewell’s talk was captured by Lincoln School of Media. Images are from Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock and a personal account on Tom’s evening lecture is by Lecturer Martyn Thayne:

TomSka_talk 1_11.12.13_fromCHTom ‘Tomska’ Ridgewell returned to Lincoln (11 Dec) to give a brilliant talk to a packed EMMTEC audience, offering some great advice for LSM alumni, prospective graduates and budding YouTube stars of the future. The talk provided a brief snapshot of Tom’s illustrious career to date, highlighting some of the highs and lows on his journey to world domination.  Tom is officially ranked within the top 200 YouTubers in the world with over 2.4 million subscribers, whilst his videos have gained over a staggering 450,000,000 views. During the talk Tom reflected on his experiences since leaving the University of Lincoln, offering an insight into how to become a successful YouTube video producer: Get yourself a crew | Take advantage | Be rubbish | Take jobs | Do the thing | Don’t panic  Continue reading

LSM Graduate Paul Rook on jobs and award nominations for 48HFP

Read our 2010 graduate Paul Rook’s frank insight into job-hunting, freelancing and striving for a dream job. Paul and another LSM graduate, Joseph (Joey) Fallon, have been nominated for The 48 Hour Film Project “a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and your team have a blast making a movie. All writing, shooting, editing and scoring must be completed in just 48 hours.”  In the London 48HFP 2013 competition Paul and Joey are up for two awards for their entry “Disconnect”:

Paul RookIt wasn’t long after my previous post on the alumni blog that I went full steam trying to find a new job. My company had tied me down to a contract that required 3 months’ notice. This caused a bit of a dilemma. If I didn’t hand in my resignation immediately I would never be able to leave for another job as no where would wait 3 months, but if we did part ways then I could find myself unemployed down the line. Never let yourself get into this position, no company should ever put a low earner in this position. Continue reading

Guest Lecture – Phil Harding

Screen Shot 2013-10-17 at 08.38.03
Phil Harding’s track record is incredible. As a recording engineer and producer he has worked with artists as diverse as The Clash, Killing Joke, Dead Or Alive, Kylie Minogue and East 17.

As part of his lecture tour to promote his book PWL: From The Factory Floor he came to the University and gave a very entertaining and informative lecture to a packed audience of Audio Production students.

The main thrust of Phil’s lecture was how different aspects of the music industry service each other and why this is something to bear in mind when fulfilling a particular role. He talked about the importance of group work in gaining these skills and about how having the right attitude is essential for success in an industry that relies so heavily on professional relationships. From Third Years to Freshers – Our Advice

Rachel HagreenHello! I’m Rachel Hagreen, a third year Media Production student. This is my first official post as a LSM student blogger, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to hand out a few pieces of advice for first year students studying Media Production or Film and TV, although the advice will almost certainly be useful for any student!

Two years ago if somebody had offered me advice I wouldn’t have bothered reading it because if we’re being totally honest all we care about this week is being a fresher and we tend to put our courses to the back of our mind at least for the first week but here’s my first piece of advice: read this list of advice from fellow third year students and try and take it all in!

Sylvia Entwistle, class of 2012. Hello prospective graduates!

I hope you’re enjoying your course (and working hard – it’s not all about those Tower Bar meetings in the beer garden you know…)

I’ve been asked to write a little bit about my journey from Studenthood to the ‘real world’ thus far and I hope I can give you a little insight on what you might expect once the heavenly bubble of University life bursts and leaves a sticky residue of hope and fear on you. Continue reading

Ian Pook, class of 2007

It’s about your ideas not what software you use – it is important to keep up to date with emerging technologies and software but your ideas are the most important thing

I started BROKENLOGO in 2007 in my last few weeks of my course – undertaking my initial piece of professional design work for the University and at the same time as working on the promotions team for the Engine Shed in its debut year. This role allowed me to achieve a position at the 02 Bristol Academy undertaking a similar role quite quickly after I’d moved to Bristol. Continue reading

Andrew Sanders update

Q: Why are Contracts like Train Connections? A: They Never Arrive When You Need Them.

It is literally three years ago since I wrote my first blog for the LSM page. I know this because I just read it again to remind myself what I wrote in preparation for writing this entry. Hopefully my grammar has improved since then!

Three years ago I had been working for a little while on a show called My First Place, a real estate show about first time homebuyers. I was a production coordinator for the show so I was in charge of getting the legal releases required for the show so we could film people and locations. I loved this job, it was great fun.
