DaniMoseley-drink_2015It has been my overall dream for a long while, that I want to pay my way through life, through my creative means.  Meaning I want to eat, pay my rent, travel and have fun all from payment through my creative outlets and ONLY through my creative outlets. No part time/ full time PAYE jobs. Straight self-employment through my writing, acting and modelling (though the latter is very few and far between).

ACTING: So I have been in various plays this year in various theatres and each one has come from the last.  I was recommended for a role for a scratch night at the Waterloo East theatre with Whoop ‘n’ Wail. The play was called Three Women in a Music Box written by Dan Horrigan and directed by Alice Bonifacio and I played Cora. Lucy Bick, Student Work Experience | Marie Claire Magazine

LucyBick_MagazineMockup-Page18-19Graduand Lucy Bick has posted about her week’s work experience (during Easter) with Marie Claire magazine. This opportunity inspired her when she created her own magazine (pictured on the left) as part of a final portfolio. Throughout my three years here studying CLM Contemporary Lens Media (Photography and Video) I LucyBick_CLMGranduand_31.05.2015have found that my passion within photography is the post production side of it, rather than taking the actual photographs. I much prefer the editing of my images and then creating different layouts with my photographs in my sketchbooks.  I have always known that I wanted to work for a magazine but I was unsure of all the different areas within a magazine and what they do.  Back in February we had a guest lecturer and a 2013 CLM graduate, Hannah Wilson, who came to give a talk on her work with the art department at Look magazine. From this talk I had much more of an understanding of the different areas within a magazine, and knew that the art department was the area which best suited me. Not long after Hannah’s visit, she passed me on some details of who to get in touch with at Marie Claire to apply for the opportunity of a week’s work experience. Continue reading →

Richard Haywood, Class of 2006 | Freelance TV Cameraman

Richard-Haywood_2006GradHello Lincolnites!  Richard here, class of 2006! Now freelance television cameraman. I studied media production focusing on TV and Radio. The first thing you realise when entering the industry is that ultimately at job interviews no one really cares. As harsh as this sounds the focus is on actual experience and often the only way to do this is starting at the bottom.

What my course did however give me was a through understanding of how various departments negotiate the ‘Creative Process’ as well as how to hold one’s self and studio etiquette. Continue reading →

Philip Rollett, Class of 2014 | Audio Production Engineer

Recent graduate Philip Rollett will be on-campus for LSFM’s HEADSPACE event on 6th May with other working audio & radio alumni to share their own industry advice with students. Philip opted for self-employment to start his new business.

PhilipRollett_2014_AP-GradAbout a month ago I was ready to give up on running my own audio company, it seemed like an impossible, thankless, task. I was constantly thinking if I was going to be able to earn a living from a degree that I’d dedicated so much time and money to. You find that you are no longer just an audio engineer, you’re a social media marketer, website developer and a phone salesman.  I set my company up Start! Audio in July last year, with the help of my part time employer Howard Young (Engine 7 Post Production), this was around two months after finishing my degree in Audio Production.  This is original sound design for Sky Ride Video Ride.

Meet the Graduates | Video on job interviews

Meet_the_Graduates_150wMeet the Graduates is just one of Lincoln School of Film & Media‘s popular networking events between our creative alumni and students.  The most recent symposium was on-campus, last October, with a packed audience at the Graduate Question Time. On the panel were alumni from 2003 to 2014: Video Director Lewis Cater, Digital Strategist Jo Graham (doing a KTP at Mortons Media Group), Screenwriter Tony Kelly, 4Crew Production Co-ordinator Aleysha Minns, freelance sound operator / technician Tom Ward and Wallbreaker Productions Producer Ashley Wilks.

The video is on their experiences about going for job interviews in the creative industries and it was captured by LSFM student crew via New Media Lincs. Thanks to 2nd year Audio Production undergraduate Mihail Sustov and 3rd year Media Production students Alex Faulkner & Rory McCarney. This piece (and the vox pop, see previous post) was produced by Rory.

Andrew McNeil, Year 3 FTV Student | Work on ‘Adrift in Soho’

AndrewMcNeil_3rdyear_crop_Dec2014I’ve returned to Uni (Lincoln School of Film & Media) after working as Assistant Art Director for a few days on a feature film called ‘Adrift in Soho’ (2015), which was being shot in Nottingham. It’s an adaptation of a Colin Wilson novel of the same name. It follows the life of a young writer, Harry Preston, who after being discharged from the RAF, moves to London in search of adventure. He fancies himself as a writer and so moves towards Soho, an area known for its creativity and finds himself involved with the many creatives of the Beat Generation. The screenplay was adapted and written by a very interesting and eccentric Uruguayan, named Pablo Behrens – who also directed the film. A very warm and capable Dane, named Martin Koblyarz, shot the film and the films art direction and production design came from a very captivating and adept Englishman, named Steven Blundell – whom I was understudy to.

I’ll tell you how I came to find myself as an Asst. Art Director at the age of twenty on a feature.

Student-mentee Bryony Hooper | Paid work with Industry Mentor

I was slightly late. On my first ever paid gig I was slightly late. The first Assistant Director (who also happens to be my mentor) called me to ask where I was. I arrived a couple of minutes before 8:30am when I was meant to be on set by 8:15am. I was upset at the fact I had just broken rule 1 of ‘never be late’ and slightly nervous as I hadn’t met any of the crew before apart from Jonathan Sidwell (my industry mentor) and slightly out of breath as I had basically just ran from Baker Street tube station to Marylebone. But the crew could not have been nicer. Nobody said anything about my lateness and Jonathan immediately introduced me to everyone there and got me straight to work. This is what I had expected the day to be. Running around fetching this, that and the other, maybe looking after a few divas, picking out all the green M&M’s. But apart from the first few jobs of make coffee, help this guy, help that guy, go find somewhere to get lunch from (where I had to ring my dad to Google maps of the area), I was stood around watching and learning most of the day. Which was amazing. I feel like I helped quite a bit and got to do an important job of audio playback and clapperboard. I also got to sit behind the director and watch his every move. I also feel like I impressed the crew quite a bit, I asked when I didn’t understand something.
