Looking China 2016 | LSFM Student film making project

LookingChina2016-logoThe aim of Looking China 看中国 is to enhance cultural communication between China and the rest of the world through the art of film. Four Lincoln School of Film & Media student-producers took part in this year’s collaborative film making project between the University of Lincoln (UK) and a University in China. LSFM Lecturer Tom Martin was on the trip and said: “This year the students visited Guizhou University in the south west of China, each visiting a remote area to make a documentary with a small local crew. The students are keen to pass on their thanks for the opportunity to partake in the trip. 

The LSFM students performed very well, with a diverse range of good quality videos being produced. The documentaries are now on YouTube, with the films and links below.” Continue reading →

Animation Degree Show, LSFM | 1st June 2016 at 1pm in LPAC

AnimationDegreeShow_1June2016Here’s your invitation to the ANIMATION DEGREE SHOW 2016.  Doors will open at 12.30 on Wednesday 1st June at University of Lincoln Performing Arts Centre (LPAC), Brayford Pool, LN6 7TS.  The show’s free and all are welcome.

Join us for the show at 1pm in LPAC and see a showcase of stunning students’ work on the BA (Hons) Animation course at the Lincoln School of Film & Media. For about a couple of hours there’ll be screenings and a short session for awards. The Animation Degree Show will be a lovely way to celebrate end of year work and meet the animators.

It’s free entry and open to the public from this Friday until 10th June at the University of Lincoln Art, Architecture and Design Building (AAD). Clementine Monro, Lincoln School of Film & Media’s Senior Lecturer, said: This year students are featuring works that include the genres of documentary, narrative, experimental and experiential in both the still and moving image. Join us on Friday 27 May at 7pm in the AAD west atrium and photography studio. Then the show’s open daily, including this weekend & Bank Holiday Monday, until June 10th from 10am-4pm.  See CLM Resolution gallery, site was designed by Adam Hewitt.

Photography is one of the University of Lincoln’s Design courses ranked 3rd in the UK, according to the National Student Survey 2015.

LSFM Degree Show 2016 | Lincoln Theatre Royal on 14th & 15th May

LSFMdegreeshow2016_logo_400x400University of Lincoln School of Film and Media final year students will showcase their creative work at the Lincoln Theatre Royal THIS weekend, and YOU are invited. It is the first time the historic city venue has staged a two-day multimedia exhibition by third year undergraduates and it is the first time the annual event is off-campus. The LSFM Degree Show is an opportunity for the public to see original, experimental and creative content in the Grade II listed theatre: from pop-up spaces like the Writers’ Room and take part in script reading to dressing rooms transformed into individual cinema booths. Screenings will be in the 450-seat Victorian auditorium, also above and below the stage will be design and digital exhibitions. Even the bar will turn into a gallery and backstage a sound and radio installation space. The LSFM Degree Show is FREE and open to the public on Saturday 11am-7pm & Sunday 11am-4pm. Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor and some content may not be suitable for children. Charlotte Downie, FTV Student | My Erasmus Exchange in Austria

Charlotte Downie a Film and Television Year 2 undergraduate at LSFM posted about her 3-month Erasmus exchange at Alpen-Adria University, in Klagenfurt. She would recommend this international opportunity, that is open to FTV students only.

On hearing of the chance to live and study in Austria, I knew this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss. I had never been to Austria, only known people who had been but the chance of learning a new language and to experience a different culture whilst living in the country was an exciting prospect.

LUMAS 2016 Awards | University of Lincoln Media Arts Showcase

Here’s a round up about the School’s annual showcase and awards ceremony, held on 23rd February, LUMAS 2016.  It was organised by the committee at Lincoln School of Film & Media, led and hosted by our 2015 Graduate events assistant Richard Rumble. The glittering black tie evening included screenings of short films, photography, audio work, and animations by students and graduates. Sarah Barrow, Head of the School of Film and Media, said: “As seen through the submissions, showreels and displays at the event, the LUMAS is a fantastic celebration of student creativity, teamwork and achievement, as well as the way staff and students worked together to make the showcase happen.

Niall Flynn, PhD candidate | Open Library of Humanities Article

Niall Flynn is a PhD Candidate at the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media. His project examines recent approaches to materiality in media theory and in particular to Media Ecologies. Niall-Flynn_PhD_Article_Jan2016Niall’s latest  paper is in an internationally leading journal and it peer-reviews ‘scholarship across the humanities disciplines’.  Niall said: you may be interested in my article on watching subtitled cinema, which has been published by the Open Library of Humanities and it is called An Intimate Encounter: Negotiating Subtitled Cinema. 

Niall-Flynn-PostGrad-2015The question of subtitling has received little attention in Film Studies, despite being the primary means by which foreign-language cinema is experienced. Current literature focuses on important matters of language and translation, but there are other aspects that exceed these matters when we watch subtitled films, aspects which are able to affect and move viewers without relying on explanation through translation. My paper shows how viewers have to negotiate these affective elements in order to apprehend foreign-language films, with special attention on their indeterminate characteristics that escape representation. Chloe Ambrose, Student | Creative Skillset Course at MediaCity

Chloe-Ambrose_LSFM_studentA LSFM Facebook notification alerted my attention: ‘FREE spaces available on a Creative Skillset Children’s Production Co-ordinator Course in MediaCity’. I clicked. Expanding the information, it dawned on me that the requirements I needed were not things held on my CV: ‘at least one year’s experience as a production assistant, production secretary, runner, and assistant location manager’. Despite this, I emailed the course and was reassured by a lovely lady that the course was very flexible in accepting those with equivalent university experience, and put me down for a place. But then came another dilemma. I was filming a wedding on the 22nd and therefore could not attend the assessment day. This was a big concern as for the course to be ‘free’ I had to participate in all three days or I would have to pay £350. My free place was looking impossible. So, I called explaining my circumstances. Once again, I was welcomed with a surprising flexibility and understanding of my situation. Here, I was allowed to partake in the 2 days’ training and be assessed via email or phone. Result! But wait… how would I get there? Continue reading →
