An Illustrated History of Warner Bros, Rick Senat | 21 Feb at UoL

WarnerBros-logoUniversity of Lincoln (UoL) is delighted to welcome Visiting Professor Rick Senat for a Special Lecture about An Illustrated History of Warner Bros on Wednesday 21st February (Part one) 1pm-4pm, (Part two) 5pm-8pm in the Jackson Lecture Theatre, Brayford Pool campus. The Uni said:  The event is FREE and open to ALL – current and former students, staff and friends. No registration needed – just turn up promptly at 1pm and 5pm. Rick will share insider stories and experiences from his impressive career with Warner Brothers – including a wide range of exclusive clips and still images straight from the WB archive.

Following a few years in Independent production in the UK and the US, Rick worked for Warner Bros. from 1976 until 2002 when he was Senior Vice-President of Business and legal affairs, responsible for activities in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He has been associated with the Harry Potter films, Greystoke, Batman, Superman and a number of Stanley Kubrick’s films. More recently, he consulted on various productions including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Troy, Alfie, Sahara, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc. He was Executive Producer of JK Rowling’s  The Casual Vacancy and the blockbuster 2016 movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them. He is currently executive producing the sequel, Fantastic Beasts, the Crimes of Grindlewald starring Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp and Jude Lawfor release worldwide in November 2018. Congratulations LSFM on RTS Student Awards!  Jessica (2017) won TWO Royal Television Society Midlands Undergrad Awards for Best Drama and Best Editing Craft tonight (30.11.17) at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

We are proud of our 2017 graduating RTS student team Patrycja Reimus, Saul Tyler, Isaac Tingey, Matt Captieux and Laura O’Brien with audio support from Ethan Adamson Joseph. They were captured on the RTS/BIF TV stream at the award ceremony. NICE.

Luke Pickering, Class of 2012 | Rising Star Pro Sound Award

IMG_1371 CONGRATS to ‘Rising Star 2017’ Luke Pickering, BA (Hons) Audio Production in 2012, who picked up an industry award for up and coming talent: I’m over the moon to have won the Pro Sound Rising Star award. There was some amazing talent and credentials amongst the other nominees so it’s a genuine surprise to be chosen, and I’m very grateful.

ProSoundawards2017-LukePickering-2012GradHe works for Paul Epworth – award winning (Grammy, Academy, The Brits) music producer and songwriter – as Assistant Engineer in-house at The Church Studios.  Luke reflected on his Audio Production  course: There were a vast range of essential skills I would have struggled to learn elsewhere. There’s obviously the technical stuff but just as importantly you learn how to work in a group and to be part of a team – after all, people skills will be one of your most valuable assets when you’re in the industry! Read the news story from the University of Lincoln press office.

We are at the cutting-edge in content and delivery of our teaching and research, and I look forward to developing more collaborations, across Schools and internationally, in the future.

Uni of Lincoln | Gold Award, Teaching Excellence Framework

University of Lincoln has been awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017. TEF is an independent assessment of teaching quality, student support and graduate success in Higher Education. A gold rating means our university degree courses are of the highest quality found in the UK.

Uni of Lincoln was ranked as one of the 59 Gold standard Higher Education providers – from 295 that entered the TEF – and you can read the news story here.

HistoLyrical released on http://1215today.com/histolyrical-artwork/ today (7 June at 12-noon). The site has an interview with the artists, Ben Peppiatt and Stephanie Bickford-Smith, about their online work that developed from asking young people “is the hysteria of social media compromising freedom of thought?” HistoLyrical explores how social media influences people’s thought processes through subliminal messages.

Gazing out of a train window and lulled by a trance-enducing soundtrack, our thoughts are interrupted, hijacked by the random thoughts and ruminations of others by a stream of words layered over our view. We are given the choice to abandon ourselves to these random musings or take control and banish them with a click of a button.’ The artists feel that “Social media sites are super efficient platforms that aid connectivity and information exposure. Increasingly they are becoming our gateway to the internet. However these sites are designed for consumption rather than contemplation, with HistoLyrical we are interested in questioning the impact this has upon our ability to think and process information coherently and what a more contemplative solution inspired by offline behaviours could look like.” Continue reading →

Dr Mikey Murray, LSFM | Film @ Edinburgh International Film Fest

Dr.MikeyMurray-onlocation-NatalieCongratulations to multiple award winning filmmaker Dr. Mikey Murray, lecturer in Film Production and Screenwriting at LSFM, for his latest short Natalie (2017) to be screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) 2017. He posted on social media that he was “absolutely thrilled to announce that Natalie will have its world premiere in competition at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 24th.” Writer and Director Mikey is pictured on-location with actress Kate Dickie (aka Lysa Arryn in Game of Thrones, 2011-14) who played the lead role. She has been involved with the story for many years and Mikey’s idea was a 2015 Kick- starter project. Kate said: “I was drawn to the script of Natalie because I love Mikey’s writing – it’s really honest, raw and truthful. I loved the story and subject matter of the film.” 

The Scottish film – about ‘a transexual who travels home to her father’s funeral in order to gain closure with her prejudiced family’ –  is in the EIFF Best Short Film category.  Mikey, founder of Indie-Lincs international film festival, has been selected to take part in the EIFF Talent Lab development sessions to support aspiring film- makers. Mikey said: Of course, I’d like to dream that I have some brilliant individual talent as a screenwriter and filmmaker, but the truth is that I have only ever made successful work through meeting and working with hugely talented collaborators. I was able to cast Game of Thrones actor, Kate Dickie in my short film recently because my high school friend (who I still work with) was able to put my screenplay in her hands. LSFM Alumni Success | 2017 Lincolnshire Digital & Tech Awards

Lincs-digital&techAwards2017-SteveSmailesphotoCongrats! LSFM Graduate success was at the Lincolnshire Digital & Tech Awards 2017 category: Best Use of Multimedia. Visit Lincoln won for its brand campaign created with Wallbreaker – a video agency run by LSFM 2014 media production alumni Thomas Mckie, Ashley Wilks and Luke Winter who said: We’re chuffed! A lot of hard work went into that campaign. Ash is pictured left of Lydia Rusling, Head of Visit Lincoln.

Runner-up in this category was epix_media, a company set up by 2007 alumni who’re co-directors Zoe Easey and Will King. Story about the awards is in The Lincolnite where images were taken by 2012 graduate Steve Smailes a freelance photographer and he is one of our inspirational LSFM Industry Mentors.  Watch Visit Lincoln: Heritage video from Wallbreaker Productions.

Wallbreaker posted on its site that Visit Lincoln: commissioned the creation of three individual videos that would be used as social media marketing tools, with an aim to encourage people to consider Lincoln as their next possible place to explore.  Continue reading →
