2012 LSM graduate Gemma Lowe received a bursary from Enterprise Inc. at the University of Lincoln to start her own business as an audio specialist and voice-over artist. Her story coincides with the 10th anniversary of Sparkhouse, with its Open Days this week. Gemma’s in no doubt that the help she got was “crucial” to setting up on her own, and she can now reflect on the experience.
It’s great being my own boss and it really keeps me motivated, but being self‐employed hasn’t exactly been what I had expected (find out why below)! I am a voice-over artist with a passion for audio recording and production. These first months have been the busiest of my life – but I have learnt from them every single day.
Having graduated from the BA (Hons) Media Production course, I was awaiting response from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) after interviewing for their PgDip Sound Design For The Theatre course, which was brand new this year, and listed a maximum of three places available in the prospectus. It feels like a lifetime since I graduated from the University of Lincoln, and in actual fact it has only been 6 months. The good side, is that I have been in employment in my chosen media sector for 8 months, and I have the university to thank for shaping my knowledge of the industry and driving me to achieve my goals.
I came out of university with a 1st Class Honours degree, an academic prize and as Student Speaker for my class. This was a huge honour, and it really felt like all my hard work had paid off. However, I never found out my final grade until after I became employed. This proved that to me that the weight of a degree will get you so far on paper, but the skills and the experience, and how much you get out of the things that are on offer to you at university, get you the job and drive you to keep going, to reach out and seek what you want. And it is that drive that allowed me to gain my 1st and to walk into my first television interview with the confidence to talk about who I wanted to become and how I was determined to get here. The 2011/2012 DLHE survey is now underway with the aim of making telephone contact with as many of our graduates who completed a course in 2012 as possible.

The 23rd of January was the first graduation day of 2013 for the University of Lincoln. As part of the LSM’s alumni team, I find it‘s a great opportunity to capture the event. Although I have to admit that I have never attended the January ceremonies at Lincoln Cathedral, until now. Today I was fortunate to see graduation from a different perspective – as a postgraduate student. So, as I warm up now with a glass of mulled wine and raise it to all alumni, I thought I’d post a couple of photos taken by my nearest and dearest.

Recent LSM graduates, Warren Hayward, James Martin, Gideon Marriott and Leanne Bacon had some valuable work experience contributing to the post production of ‘The Forty’, a film made by Lecturer Dan Frodsham. The film charts the painstaking work of conserving an exquisite Renaissance fresco in Famagusta, Cyprus. Dan sent us an update on the film’s success:

Having finished my degree in Audio Production, I am currently working for Ideal Shopping Direct as a Technical Operator. The company broadcasts over four channels and its main channel, Ideal World, is live 17 hours a day. My main responsibilities within my role are varied and alongside operating audio for the shows, I am learning new skills in different roles such as Floor Technician, Video Controller and Camera Operation.
