Headspace 2015 Industry Event | Lincoln School of Film & Media

Today’s HEADSPACE was LSFM’s on-campus industry event organised by Senior Lecturer Zara Healy. Our Visiting Professor Trevor Dann opened the day. He introduced industry guests, who were primarily our alumni and BBC Radio Lincolnshire’s Managing Editor Charlie Partridge. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain an insight into the range of employment after graduation. Work can be in many forms as our graduates shared why they started their own media businesses; how to leap from local radio into local telly as well as network TV; and doing forms of digital media to pursue their passions.  Here are some moments captured at Headspace 2015 – networking and socialising.

Philip Rollett, Class of 2014 | Audio Production Engineer

Recent graduate Philip Rollett will be on-campus for LSFM’s HEADSPACE event on 6th May with other working audio & radio alumni to share their own industry advice with students. Philip opted for self-employment to start his new business.

PhilipRollett_2014_AP-GradAbout a month ago I was ready to give up on running my own audio company, it seemed like an impossible, thankless, task. I was constantly thinking if I was going to be able to earn a living from a degree that I’d dedicated so much time and money to. You find that you are no longer just an audio engineer, you’re a social media marketer, website developer and a phone salesman.  I set my company up Start! Audio in July last year, with the help of my part time employer Howard Young (Engine 7 Post Production), this was around two months after finishing my degree in Audio Production.  This is original sound design for Sky Ride Video Ride.

Film Production Summer School | 19th July to 1st August 2015

LSFM-FilmProductionSummerSchool_2015 The Lincoln School of Film & Media 2-week Summer School 2015 concentrates on the key aspects of film production, including scriptwriting, cinematography, producing, directing, sound and post production. If you always wanted to know how the professionals do it then now is your chance. Not only will you have access to our state-of-the-art facilities, field trips around the UK, film making workshops and seminars delivered by industry guest speakers, you will also be actively involved in the production of at least one short film, mentored by experts from all areas of film production. The Magpie animated film | Screening at BFI Future Film Fest

BFI-logoThe BFI Future Film Festival (20th-22nd February) is in its eighth year, and organisers said “it is bigger and better than ever!” On Friday 20th it will be having a new Animation+ day.  The Fest will be screening The Magpie, a film that was made by former Lincoln School of Film & Media students. You can now watch The Magpie, which was created when in their final year as animation students, by William Wivell and Gary Davies. Will’s got in touch to add: credit, too, to Jake Longworth, the 3D concept work and post-production guy and Estelle Sharpe, who assisted with the animation. The sound design was created by audio production graduates Lilly Cording and Alex O’Brien.  Alex said: “The Magpie was a fantastic project to be a part of. I learnt a lot about working with animation and how important music and sound really are in this genre. As a team we are incredibly proud to have our film shown at the BFI Future Film Festival next month and we are excited to see what may come of it.”

Daniel Escobar, Class of 2014 | Luma St. Animation Nomination

Daniel_Escobar_LumaSt_AnimationGrad2014Following on from recent screenings at film fests Luma St. has more good news. 2014 Animation graduate Daniel Escobar who created, edited and directed the short said: Luma St. has been nominated for the finalists in the International digital animation festival – Nagoya 2014 (it’s in Japan).  It’s also been accepted into the Reel Genius International Film Festival and for those of you who haven’t seen the film, it is in a public competition at the audience awards. Meet_the_Graduates_150w Meet the Graduates is the School’s alumni event to bring together our graduates and students to share experiences, passions and make face-to-face contacts. It’s free, in-house on the 1st floor Minerva Building. 29 October 2014 from 2-5pm.

Steve Bernard, Class of 2013 | Audio Production Alumnus

Screen Shot 2014-08-18 at 11.30.54I’m Steve Bernard, a BA (Hons) Audio Production alumnus from the Class of ’13. Since I graduated, I’ve been employed at Cooz’s Recording Studio, in Oxford. My relationship with the studio actually began almost three years ago, after my first summer at the University of Lincoln, when I did a week long work experience there to enhance my CV. This led to an internship which I maintained around my degree, and I was offered a job at the studio after I finished my third year. Working at the studio has been a great experience and I’ve recently found the most success as a Hip Hop producer – we were fortunate to have a break with a South African rapper called Rowan Groom, and his contacts and reputation in the emerging local Hip Hop scene has meant that business in this genre has skyrocketed. In the last 6 months, I’ve worked with a wide array of talent, producing mixtapes and EPs local rappers and singers such as Apt Ochiela, Carby, Manny O, Ellie Robbins and Rifle.

Getting business for my work relies heavily on word of mouth and networking. Continue reading →

Alex O’Brien, Class of 2014 | Audio Production Freelancer

Alex-O'Brien_APClass-of-2014My name is Alex and I am going to be graduating in Audio Production in September 2014. Since finishing university in May I’ve found out I will be graduating with First Class Honours. I never thought I was capable of achieving this. It has given me so much confidence in my abilities and I cannot thank the amazing LSM staff enough.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have a job interview at Shepperton Studios for the position of trainee sound assistant and it was an amazing experience. I met some incredible people who had done the sound on some of my favourite films and saw industry standard studios in action. The whole experience has kept me inspired and has given me more drive to carry on working towards my goal to work in the creative industry.
