We’ve a series of clips this week from Meet the Graduates 2014. In the first piece you can find out where some of our alumni are now. Head of Lincoln School of Media, Sarah Barrow, officially introduced MtG 2014. It was a special occasion because it was one of the School’s event to mark 20 years of media at the University of Lincoln. Meet the Grads was bigger than ever. Over 30 alumni attended (see who we spotted, names are below the video) the networking event between our students and graduates. Many thanks to you all for making, and marking, MtG 2014!

LSM Headspace| Great Minds Lecture with Ken Scott | 30 April 2014

Headspace is a joint LSM radio and audio networking event where students can meet industry professionals (some are our graduates) from presenters to podcasters, composers to recordists, as well as a sound artist, drama production co-ordinator and our Visiting Professor Trevor Dann. It’s an opportunity to talk to all the guests during short informal sessions, within small groups. The idea is to talk directly with all guests about any aspect of careers and make new contacts, To see if there are any spaces this Wednesday, between 11am and 3pm, you must email Louise at LSM: llawlor@lincoln.ac.uk

World-renowned record producer/engineer Ken Scott’s talk will be taking place as part of the ‘Great Minds’ Lecture Series on Wednesday 30th April 2014 at 6pm [seated at 5.45pm] in the EMMTEC lecture theatre, University of Lincoln. This Monday, 2011 alumnus Lewis Cater who’s worked with artists and bands for 5 years as a video director and editor will be in the Coop Lecture Theatre at 1pm. He’ll share his journey since graduating – pitching for music videos to negotiating with Sony Entertainment and Universal Music Group. SOUND! Get your questions ready …

Kickstart Bing’s ‘Progress’ a collaborative electronica album NOW

LSM’s 2011 graduate and creative Christopher Bingham, known filmmaker and YouTuber [Slomozovo], has a Kickstarter campaign. Just days are left to back Bing! “I find myself making music late into the night. It’s addictive, as such a big music lover, to be in control of my own soundscape.

Kickstarter’s been taking advance orders for a collaborative album I’m making this year under my musical moniker High Five Spaceship. On the 10-track folk-inspired album will be celebrated musicians including Corinna Crabtree, Will Dixon, Tofu Stravinsky, my sister Jenny and father Steve Bingham, and Lincoln favourites Elliott Morris and Jack Shaw. It’s an interesting time to be using crowdfunding, which is something I research a lot for my teaching. I’m essentially using it as a glorified pre-order system, but the simple fact that I chose the KS platform lends a PR value which is undeniable. Also, in terms of production/distro, I’m trying something I find interesting. The release packages are digital, physical and ‘license’, which comes with a PDF document granting the buyer written permission for commercial use of all tracks on the album in video uploaded online. Listen up! Update from Matt North, Class of 2012, and ‘Headspace’

“I cannot remember a time when I did not have a love for sound” said Matt North. He was in the first cohort of BA (Hons) Audio Production students and has successfully pursued his passion as a sound recordist. Matt is on LSM’s mentoring pilot (thanks again!), which links professionals with our students: “Media mentoring is going great. It’s good to be able to pass on advice to soon-to-be graduates using my knowledge and experiences. I would have found media mentoring really useful in my final year.” See Matt on-campus for ‘Headspace’.

He will be joining sound industry professionals on 30th April. Senior Lecturer Zara Healy’s organising the networking event for radio and audio students, which will be on a first come basis. More nearer the time, but you can see the audio & radio guest list below! First a career update from Matt:

“After graduating from AP in 2012, I started work as a Technical Operator for Ideal Shopping Direct, across their range of shopping TV channels including Ideal World and Create & Craft before being promoted to Audio Operator, where I mixed over 500 hours of broadcast audio across the company’s network until last June when I was fortunate enough to land a job as a Location Sound Recordist for a small kit & crew company called Videoheads, based in White City in London. Since then, I have been recording location sound for a wide range of TV programming, commercials, corporate and legal films with credits including Crimewatch, iTunes Festival 2013, The Gadget Show and have recently come back from shooting in the Philippines in conjunction with BBC’s The One Show & Sport Relief. I also work on audio post-production at home in whatever spare time I have for both short and feature films.” ‘Headspace’ is a joint LSM radio and audio event where students can meet 10 industry professionals, some are our graduates. Congrats! Audio Production’s Alice Asbury Wins Excellence Award

Well done from all at LSM to Year 1 Audio Production student Alice Asbury who received the University of Lincoln’s scholarship award.

The Excellence Scholarship recognised Alice’s outstanding academic achievement. She attained the highest amount of tariff points in one sitting during her BTEC Extended Diploma in Music. Alice’s accomplishment put her in the category of ‘the highest achieving new undergraduate students joining the institution.’

Lincoln School of Media’s Alice was one of nine first year students, from across the University’s Colleges, to get an Excellence Scholarship from the Vice Chancellor Professor Mary Stuart: “Scholarships represents a very special moment for us all here at the University of Lincoln, when we acknowledge the successes of our newest undergraduate students.”

Voluntary Work Opportunity – Short Doco for soundLINCS

Can you help to create a short documentary for soundLINCS to capture its B15 event, which’ll celebrate 15 years of community music and try to break a World Record on 3rd May 2014? soundLINCS is a not-for-profit community music group and organisers said: “The event will see 1500 musicians come together to play a brand new piece of music and attempt to break a world record and we hope that this opportunity could give the volunteers some great experience and footage for their showreel, as well as a chance to be a part of this unique day. We would like a team (or individual) who could film the rehearsals during the day and interview the musicians, composers and volunteers. There may also be the chance to film at some of the smaller group rehearsals, but dates of these are still to be confirmed. It will be showcased at The Little Red Gallery (at the top of steep hill) tomorrow, Thursday 12th December, and starts at 7pm. It is free entry and it would just be great to see some of you there. Student Opportunity: NEW ‘LSM Festival’ To Showcase Your Work

Hello! You probably won’t have heard much, if anything, about me (I’m one of those elusive Audio folk) but I’m hoping to set up an LSM festival. It would serve as a way to get smaller ideas together to see how they work, perhaps for a bigger third year project, to show off any work you’ve done outside of university which isn’t suitable for a film festival, or for any Audio Prodders who want to create something without feeling they’ve to include a visual part to get it heard.

It could be as experimental as you like, though we will probably like you to stick to a broad theme – those who went to Frequency where the 2013 theme was ‘Revolution’ will understand how all-encompassing they can be. But visual work will be very welcome, especially if it has an interactive element or needs special, site-specific viewing requirements, but this won’t be a film festival. Continue reading →
