BBC’s 1st OB recreated by LSM, Locals, a Violinist & Nightingale!
To celebrate the 90th anniversary of BBC radio, LSM Senior Lecturer in audio production David McSherry shares this sound story.
90 years ago today on the 19th May, the BBC transmitted its very first outside broadcast and the stars of the show were cellist Beatrice Harrison accompanied by a very tuneful nightingale. To celebrate the anniversary, Senior Lecturer in radio and sound Dylan Roys and I accepted the challenge from Reverend Mark Holden (Wragby parishes) to recreate the historic event in Lincolnshire.
Violinist Janet Welsh kindly agreed to join us in this quest and we headed off to Whisby Nature Reserve to recruit a willing nightingale to our band. As dusk fell, Graham, our expert guide and one of Whisby’s wardens, attuned our ears to the song of the nightingale amongst the many other voices of blackcap, whitethroat and robin. LISTEN to ‘The Violin and The Nightingale’ here. Continue reading
LSM Headspace| Great Minds Lecture with Ken Scott | 30 April 2014
Headspace is a joint LSM radio and audio networking event where students can meet industry professionals (some are our graduates) from presenters to podcasters, composers to recordists, as well as a sound artist, drama production co-ordinator and our Visiting Professor Trevor Dann. It’s an opportunity to talk to all the guests during short informal sessions, within small groups. The idea is to talk directly with all guests about any aspect of careers and make new contacts, To see if there are any spaces this Wednesday, between 11am and 3pm, you must email Louise at LSM: llawlor@lincoln.ac.uk
World-renowned record producer/engineer Ken Scott’s talk will be taking place as part of the ‘Great Minds’ Lecture Series on Wednesday 30th April 2014 at 6pm [seated at 5.45pm] in the EMMTEC lecture theatre, University of Lincoln. Principal Lecturer at LSM Bryan Rudd said: This man is a legend in the music industry and is simply too good to miss. I urge you (students and staff) to book a place as soon as possible! To be at this event you will need to reserve a place in advance with events@lincoln.ac.uk Continue reading

Student Opportunity: NEW ‘LSM Festival’ To Showcase Your Work
Hello! You probably won’t have heard much, if anything, about me (I’m one of those elusive Audio folk) but I’m hoping to set up an LSM festival. It would serve as a way to get smaller ideas together to see how they work, perhaps for a bigger third year project, to show off any work you’ve done outside of university which isn’t suitable for a film festival, or for any Audio Prodders who want to create something without feeling they’ve to include a visual part to get it heard.
It could be as experimental as you like, though we will probably like you to stick to a broad theme – those who went to Frequency where the 2013 theme was ‘Revolution’ will understand how all-encompassing they can be. But visual work will be very welcome, especially if it has an interactive element or needs special, site-specific viewing requirements, but this won’t be a film festival. Continue reading

From LSM’s Principal Lecturer Bryan Rudd:
NEW WAVE – The LSM’s weekly media, music and arts show on SIREN FM needs YOU! You’re invited to get involved from across all three years and across all programmes.
Jack Poston will be the programme series editor, and we need folks from all areas of media: film, TV, photography, audio, design, etc to present; research; record; edit; and run the live studio. NEW WAVE will be a sort of sexed up version of Radio 4 type Media Show/Front Row/Woman’s Hour mix with a liberal coating of fairy dust sprinkled on it (in other words aimed at a younger audience!). This is a great opportunity not only for all radio students but for ALL students to talk and present all areas of media, music and culture. We’ll also be targeting members of staff as contributors! Please get in touch ASAP with either me, email: brudd@lincoln.ac.uk or Jack Poston. Thanks.
