Here’s your invitation to Meet the Graduates (MtG) 2017 alumni network event between our former and current students. Head of Lincoln School of Film & Media Professor Steven Peacock posted: We hope you’ll join LSFM on the afternoon of Wednesday 8th November 2017 at Brayford Pool campus for the great gathering between our graduates and students. I’d like to meet you, so hope we can connect at MtG.

MtG 2017 will be in the Stephen Langton Building. Our network event will start at 12.30pm with a buffet lunch for alumni. At 2pm LSFM students will have the opportunity for an audience with alumni at the popular, frank, Graduate Question Time. From 3.30pm there’ll be a networking session; one-to-one between students, fellow grads and staff over a drinks reception. Alumni will also have the chance to see developments at the School, so let us know if you’d like a tour. RSVP by 30th Oct via email: alumni@lincoln.ac.uk

Luke Pickering, Class of 2012 | Rising Star Pro Sound Award

CONGRATS to ‘Rising Star 2017’ Luke Pickering, BA (Hons) Audio Production in 2012, who picked up an industry award for up and coming talent: I’m over the moon to have won the Pro Sound Rising Star award. There was some amazing talent and credentials amongst the other nominees so it’s a genuine surprise to be chosen, and I’m very grateful.

He works for Paul Epworth – award winning (Grammy, Academy, The Brits) music producer and songwriter – as Assistant Engineer in-house at The Church Studios. Luke reflected on his Audio Production course: There were a vast range of essential skills I would have struggled to learn elsewhere. There’s obviously the technical stuff but just as importantly you learn how to work in a group and to be part of a team – after all, people skills will be one of your most valuable assets when you’re in the industry! Dani Moseley, Class of 2007 | Multimedia Career update

Dani Moseley’s creative career has clocked up ten years from acting (film & TV) to award winning script writing, as well as modelling and facilitating workshops, after graduating in media production. She’s one of our inspirational industry mentors and also, er, our annual blogger! It’s nearly been a year already since I last posted in … Meet the Graduates was great. Lovely meeting some of you and my mentee, who I have been in contact with all year and glad to hear she’s applying for as many things as she sees fit regardless of the outcome, as you just never know.

LA and New York were amazing. Got management out there before I even landed, which was cool. It was just nice to be there, by myself, seeing how life could be. It was the first time in a long while that I got to solely focus on my acting and it was heavenly. Did a few auditions, signed up to a few casting sites out there, caught up with my agent who I met early that year and we’re still very much in-tune with each other which is great. Joanne Newton BA (Hons) Media Production, Class of 2017: What a day! I don’t even know where to begin! Feels a bit of a whirlwind.

Graduating next to everyone I’ve worked so hard with for three years makes me incredibly proud of not only myself but everyone around me. And having the chance to experience this in such an amazing building is something I will never forget! I feel very proud and very lucky right now, and having my degree in my hands feels so surreal.

I have been asked to write for the Alumni page a few times, but I have always had a goal in mind which I strived to achieve, before I started to look back.

Today I am sitting on a laptop in my apartment in West Hollywood, living a life I had dreamt about for over 14 years. So I thought it was a good time to write something.

This is a very long story, BUT if you prevail to the end, like all good stories, there are some valuable lessons inside.

From University to Editing

I got my first video camera for Christmas when I was 15 and never put it down. Like most, I grew up dreaming of working in Hollywood, directing movies.

I studied Media Production between 2007-2010 specialising in Single Camera and Digital Media. By the end of the course I was passionate about all aspects of the degree, even the parts I left behind in previous semesters. After graduating I was undecided on what to do next, my first thought was to do a Masters. In order to pay for it, I decided to take a year out, get the first job I could find as I saved up.

The job turned out to be the Mcdonalds at the end of my road. While working behind the grill, I applied for jobs and work experience at various production houses to gain media experience. After hundreds of emails and applications, and 7 or 8 interviews for Runner and junior positions, I was unsuccessful. I needed experience, which I was unable to get. Joanne Newton, LSFM Student | Peru17 Challenge update

Hola from Joanne Newton! LSFM final year Media Production undergraduate with fellow students from the University of Lincoln are doing voluntary work on a media literacy charity project in Peru with Challenges Abroad. Today is their last day said Jo: surrounded by all of the children, their parents and some teachers we watched everyone’s creations. They were so amazed when they saw their little faces on the big screen! We gave out prizes to them and then said goodbye with hugs from all. I won’t lie I even shed a tear! It was incredible and will stay with me forever.

Timely now to reflect with snippets from her blog about the first teaching day: I was feeling a little nervous that morning, not knowing what to expect from the school or the kids. Continue reading →

News from the digital culture website 1215.Today about its latest commissioned artwork. HistoLyrical released on http://1215today.com/histolyrical-artwork/ today (7 June at 12-noon). The site has an interview with the artists, Ben Peppiatt and Stephanie Bickford-Smith, about their online work that developed from asking young people “is the hysteria of social media compromising freedom of thought?” HistoLyrical explores how social media influences people’s thought processes through subliminal messages.

The online experience is described as taking viewers ‘on a very different kind of train journey. Gazing out of a train window and lulled by a trance-enducing soundtrack, our thoughts are interrupted, hijacked by the random thoughts and ruminations of others by a stream of words layered over our view. We are given the choice to abandon ourselves to these random musings or take control and banish them with a click of a button.’ The artists feel that “Social media sites are super efficient platforms that aid connectivity and information exposure. Increasingly they are becoming our gateway to the internet. However these sites are designed for consumption rather than contemplation, with HistoLyrical we are interested in questioning the impact this has upon our ability to think and process information coherently and what a more contemplative solution inspired by offline behaviours could look like.” Continue reading →
