Oliver Cowton, LSFM Grad | Best Doco, Midlands Movies Awards

Congratulations to Oliver Cowton, filmmaking LSFM postgraduate, who won Best Documentary at the Midlands Movies Awards 2018 (on 3rd March). Oli was originally commissioned by Channel 4’s Random Acts to direct and produce Portrait (2017). It is a 3-minute short film and he said:  It’s a great encouragement to receive this award from Midlands Movies. 

Making films is always hard work. But I was lucky to have an amazing team, mainly made of staff and students at the University of Lincoln, that helped bring this story to life.

Hannah Skidmore, Class of 2014 | Aesthetica Fest BAFTA-Recognised

HannahSkidmore-ASFF2017_photo-by-Jim Poyner PhotographyIt was always my aim to remain within the film industry after graduation. “It’s all happening in London. You want a job in film, London’s is the place to be.” Now if I had a pound for every time this was said to me, I might have been able to afford to live in London! But truth be told, moving to London never really crossed my mind. I don’t buy into the fact that you must be in London to have a good job. It’s easy to get caught up in people telling you how important it is to work in the “big city” but I couldn’t disagree more. There is a wealth of talent right across the country that all too often gets overlooked. Don’t get me wrong, London works for many people, but just not me. I’m a big advocate of taking some of the focus off London so that other amazing cities across the UK, such as Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds etc. can flourish and develop. It’s this desire to stand out from the crowd that drew me to Aesthetica. 

Aesthetica-Mag-CoverHere was this incredible business that produced not only one of the most successful arts and culture publications, Aesthetica magazine, but had its own BAFTA-Recognised film festival, international Art Prize and Creative Writing Award. To top it all off, it was right on my doorstep!  Since joining the team last September as Aesthetica’s Marketing Coordinator, it’s been a complete whirlwind. In less than three months I’ve been front and center for the launch of three issues, we’ve opened both the Art Prize and Creative Writing Prize, and hosted the 7th edition of the Aesthetica Short Film Festival.

I can’t begin to explain how rewarding it is to go to work each day and be surrounded by people with as much passion and excitement for film. The Aesthetica Short Film Festival (ASFF) is one of the world’s leading international short film festivals, celebrating independent film from around the world and it really does pride itself on being an outlet for supporting and championing filmmaking. The festival takes place each November across the city of York, showcasing over 300 films from both established and emerging filmmakers, along with numerous industry masterclasses, guest programmes, premiere screenings and special events. To submit your short this year visit: www.asff.co.uk/submit. LSFM Industry Mentoring (2018-19) | Student Opportunity is OPEN

Mentoring-JoAshmanLincoln School of Film & Media 1st & 2nd Year students can APPLY for LSFM Industry Mentoring to start in the next academic year (2018-19). Our superb School-Industry opportunity is for 20 selected undergraduates to be mentored by a professional who volunteer their time from the working world. Currently mentors are working in audio production, TV, radio, film, design at Hello! magazine, in photography and in multimedia jobs from social media to scriptwriting. This call-out is for LSFM Level 1 and 2 students from animation, audio production, film & television, media production and photography to register their interest. Phil Krstic, Class of 2012 | TV Freelance Assistant Producer

Phil-Krstic-2012GradPhil Krstic is a First-class BA (Hons) Media Production graduate from the University of Lincoln – School of Media (LSM) in 2012 and now called LSFM – School of Film & Media. He works as a TV freelancer and gives a great insight about Filming Life on the Run: Celebrity Hunted broadcast on Channel 4.

Working in television, you find yourself filming in all sorts of different locations and scenarios. What I didn’t expect to be filming, 5 years after graduating from LSM, was celebrity fugitives on the run from real life private investigators and detectives, all in aid of ‘Stand up to Cancer’. Those not familiar, ‘Celebrity Hunted’ (Shine TV, 2017) is a celebrity twist on the prime time flagship Channel 4 show whereby fugitives have to evade capture for 4 weeks by hiding out and keeping a low profile anywhere in mainland UK. Meanwhile a team of ‘hunters’ have to hack phones, interrogate relatives and plot to hunt them down; especially difficult if you’re instantly recognised in every small town and village you try to hide out in the country.

There’ll be around 20 LSFM alumni attending from BA (Hons) Animation, BA (Hons) CLM/ Photography and BA (Hons) Media Production like YouTuber TomSka – Thomas Ridgewell, Class of 2011; Associate Producer at Nickelodeon Aimee Cleaver, Class of 2014; Freelance Assistant Producer Phil Krstic, Class of 2012; Content Producer for CBeebies Rosie Turner, Class of 2015; and Senior BBC TV Director James Waddell, Class of 2000 who said he was offered two jobs when he graduated:

James WaddellThe first offer came during a meeting with the head of CITV in London. I had interviewed him for my dissertation and wanted to let him know that I had received a first and to also thank him for his involvement. In an email he had mentioned “if you are ever in London…” well I took that literally and went to see him! At the end our our chat he offered me a role as an assistant cameraman on a new series.  I actually turned this job down and took a job at Sky as I thought this role would give me more experience during the long term. Within 6 months I was trained to be a vision mixer, a route I knew to being a director.  Continue reading →

Congratulations LSFM on RTS Student Awards!  Jessica (2017) won TWO Royal Television Society Midlands Undergrad Awards for Best Drama and Best Editing Craft tonight (30.11.17) at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

We are proud of our 2017 graduating RTS student team Patrycja Reimus, Saul Tyler, Isaac Tingey, Matt Captieux and Laura O’Brien with audio support from Ethan Adamson Joseph. They were captured on the RTS/BIF TV stream at the award ceremony. NICE.

Meet the Graduates 2017 | Vox Pop on Job-hunting

Head of LSFM Professor Steven Peacock said: There was a real buzz about the place.
