Industry Mentoring | LSFM Student Opportunity

Register NOW for a media mentor! This superb student opportunity is only open to University of Lincoln School of Film & Media undergraduates. TWENTY selected students will be mentored by a professional who volunteer their time from the world of work. LSFM Industry Mentoring will run in the new academic year (2019-20), subject to the School’s schedule.

I applied for LSFM Industry Mentoring as I thought it would give me an insight into post-university life and help me understand how to progress into a media career.  I was paired with Ben Atkinson-Foster, the Digital Education Developer for the College of Arts and a former media student at the University of Lincoln, who shared his experiences in industry as well as his interests in Radio; of which he produces and presents a specialist music podcast.

I am an avid music fan and DJ with aspirations to work in the events industry as well as on Radio and so Ben was a very ideal person to have been mentored by. Continue reading →

Call-out is OPEN for University of Lincoln School of Film & Media undergraduates to register their interest for a mentor from the media industry.  This superb student opportunity is due to start in the next academic year (2019-20), subject to the School’s schedule. LSFM Industry Mentoring is designed for TWENTY selected students to be mentored by a professional who volunteer their time from the working world.

Currently our media mentors are working in design, photography, animation, film, television, radio, and audio production, as well as in multimedia jobs from scriptwriting to social media. Media Mentoring 2018-19 | Industry and LSFM

Sean Strange Media MentorUniversity of Lincoln School of Film and Media (LSFM) officially launched this month its Industry Mentoring between 20 professionals and undergraduates for 2018-19. Each academic year, we confirm media mentors who’re available to volunteer time from their busy workload to support students who applied for this 1-to-1 employability opportunity. LSFM Mentoring started as a pilot, in 2014-15 with the Uni’s Careers Team, and now has over 40 professionals on its mentors’ database. The School’s proud that the majority of mentors are our alumni. Ian Pook, Class of 2007 is a Brand & PR Designer based in Bristol. He has clients from M&S to White Stuff, and has been our media mentor for 3 years:  Meeting my mentoree in person was very good to build a more relaxed and productive relationship going forward. Congrats Imogen Hayes, LSFM 3rd Year | Runner Job after Uni

As a third year, the daunting acknowledgment that Uni (of Lincoln) is over soon and I will need to fit into reality hits hard. I am fortunately one of those people who likes to get stuff done early so my period of stress and panic hits way before deadline day – this is something I’ve always done in all aspects of my life including career prospects. I did my first piece of work experience in the Media Industry at 18, working as a runner for a week at CrowTV Post Production. This mainly consisted of making teas and coffees and the occasional cocktail (cocktail Fridays is a theme I’ve seen in more than one Post Production house). After that, I started Uni (Media Production course) and felt studies were more important. Around the end of my first semester of the second year, I looked at my CV and thought I needed more work experience.

If there is one thing I’ve learnt from seeing my siblings go through University and then try to get a job is that experience is everything. When I say everything, I do mean everything!  Continue reading →

Hannah Wilson, Class of 2012 | Designer at Grazia Magazine

HannahWilson_2003GradI can’t quite believe that I moved to Lincoln to start my degree just over 6 years ago now, and that I’ve had a full time job in London for over three!  I studied Contemporary Lens Media, now BA (Hons) Photography, at Lincoln, and can honestly say I wouldn’t have the job I do today without my degree from the university; not only because of the skills that I learnt whilst studying, or even just having the title on my CV, but the fact that it gave me three years of uninterrupted time to build a solid portfolio that I could proudly take to interview with prospective employers. Our lecturers used to tell us to treasure the time, because rarely would we ever have as much time to invest in making work again. How right they were!  

I currently work at Grazia magazine in London. My role is on the the art desk, designing pages for the magazine and editing images to choose the best ones to send to print each week. Continue reading →

Rosie Turner, Class of 2015 | Work-life since leaving Lincoln

RosieTurner_2015GradSince leaving Lincoln and heading down to London, these past few months have been unbelievably busy! At the moment I have just taken on a contract as an Assistant Producer with Social Life, a social media agency based in London, founded by Ex Radio 1 social leads. Our clients include MTV UK, X Factor, First Dates, CBBC and Red Bull Media to name a few. My role involves a bit of everything as we are a start-up business! My average week will consist of meetings with clients, developing social media strategies, video editing, photography, planning the filming of gigs with our music clients, organising schedules for the press launches of TV shows and booking locations for events!

I progressed to the role after finishing my trainee scheme at Channel 4 as a freelance Social Networker alongside my degree. Continue reading →

Mentoring | LSFM and Industry

LSFM Mentoring is a unique way to link industry with selected undergraduates. Thanks to volunteer mentors from the world of work who make time to support our final year or level 2 students in an academic year.  Each mentor brings their unique experience of the job market to help our students, during their course, as they plan goals and pursue passions for a career. In the past our mentors and mentees have explored everything from work opportunities to discussing dissertations. Pairs are in contact at least 6 times across semesters, so may be around 6-12 hours during the academic year. Contact time is flexible and pairs choose how to meet: face-to-face, talking on the phone, having a web chat or using other online platforms.

Mentors are offered an induction to mentoring, written guidelines and thereafter the student-mentee liaises with their mentor.
