Goodbye to Mike Mason

Mike MasonA very fond farewell from LSM’s staff and students to Mike Mason, Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Media Production, who has retired from the University of Lincoln. Mike moved into teaching after his artistic participation in the cultural sector in the UK and mainland Europe that encompassed mainstream and alternative media.

Mike’s message: I wish you all a great future in the full knowledge that the School of Media will continue to be the very best place to achieve what our students aspire to. I came to University as an undergraduate student in 1990 with the ambition to get a reasonable degree and hopefully move into teaching – I have succeeded in both those ambitions and much, much more. It is the ‘much more’ that means I will be leaving these hallowed halls a very happy chap indeed.” Continue reading →

Epix Media double with LSM Interns

LSM’s 2007 graduates Zoe Easey and Will King are co-directors at Epix Media in Lincoln. The creative business has doubled its turnover and its staff. Well done!

Senior Web Developer Zoe established the business in 2010.  A year later, Will  joined as a Videographer.  They say the “Uni-factor” has come into play, because the School of Media is where their first employees have come from:

We’re particularly pleased to have been able to offer internships to ambitious young people who’re keen to work within the highly competitive media sector. Gemma Lowe’s business start-up

2012 LSM graduate Gemma Lowe received a bursary from Enterprise Inc. at the University of Lincoln to start her own business as an audio specialist and voice-over artist.  Her story coincides with the 10th anniversary of Sparkhouse, with its Open Days this week.  Gemma’s in no doubt that the help she got was “crucial” to setting up on her own, and she can now reflect on the experience.

‘Don’t be a plonker!’ Save TV Centre Studios

Today is the official launch of the ‘Save Television Centre Studios’ campaign. It aims to halt demolishing five of the UK’s working studios. Chris Hainstock, LSM’s Senior Lecturer, has been party to the press launch: 

poster_plonkertvcThe campaign has been set up by a group of TV industry veterans – directors, producers, sound engineers, technicians, crew and many others from all walks of television production – who all feel passionately about the demolition of not only some of the best working TV studios in the country, but the destruction of such an iconic and magical place to work. Stars including Esther Rantzen, David Jason, Richard Wilson, Al Murray, Charlie Brooker and Michael Parkinson are backing the campaign. Continue reading →

Update on the Lancaster Film Project

Lincoln School of Media graduates and some of our students have been on-location to shoot a short called ‘Lancaster’.

It is a period drama about the Lancaster bomber crew on what would turn out to be their final mission across occupied Europe.  Graduate Phil Stevens & Red Dog Film was commissioned by East Lindsey District Council to make this film for the Lancaster’s 75th anniversary later this year. LANC_DAY3 - 29The crew are now in the editing stage, and sound post production will take place at the Lincoln Sound Theatre in the School of Media. ‘Lancaster’ is due to premier in June.

LSM’s Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock said: “The Lancaster film project has just finished four days’ shooting in and around Lincolnshire. Written and directed by some of our graduates, Phil Stevens and Lewis Gemmill. The Director of Photography is another graduate Stewart MacGregor, and Denise Barry was make up/wardrobe.

I have set up a Twitter feed @lancastermovie and also a Facebook page. A big thank you to Tom Mckie (Level 2 media prod student) and Ross McGowan (Level 3 media prod student) who acted as camera assistants and runners for the entire shoot, including the night shoot 5pm to 7am!”

Radio, Sound & Music Symposium II – Book Now!

This all day student event will be on 1st May 2013 from 10am in the Architecture Building, ARM201.  With a fantastic line up of radio experts, creatives and music specialists, including a panel of our graduates working in the industry you’ll need to book your place now!

Bryan_RuddRadio, Sound & Music Symposium II organiser Bryan Rudd said this free event “is aimed specifically at students studying Radio and Audio; however, all students from the Lincoln School of Media are welcome. There are a limited number of places so you must book early to be sure of attending. To book your place at the event, you must contact Rosaline Smith in the School office, rosmith@lincoln.ac.uk and provide your name, course/year information and a contact number.”
