LSFM Student Opportunity | Industry Mentoring is OPEN

LSFM_Mentoring-LOGOOPEN NOW! Lincoln School of Film & Media undergraduates can APPLY for LSFM Industry Mentoring (2017-18). Our superb School-Industry opportunity is for TWENTY selected students to be mentored by a professional who volunteer their time from the world of work. Currently our mentors are working in BBC TV, radio, film, & audio production, at Hello! magazine, in photography and in multimedia jobs from social media to scriptwriting/acting. This call-out is for LSFM Year 1 & Year 2 students from animation, audio production, film & TV, media production and photography to register. Please download and complete this LSFM_MENTORING-Student-Form(26May)2017-18 by Friday 26th May 2017.

Remember there are ONLY 20 student places for the new academic year. So please return your form to Louise Lawlor via email before 2nd June 2017. Louise’s email: llawlor@lincoln.ac.uk.  If you’re selected as a student-mentee you must be available to attend the 1-hour induction on-campus. Creative Careers Festival | College of Arts 6th-8th Feb 2017

CreativeCraeersFest-Feb2017.PosterBOOK NOW for the FREE Creative Careers Festival, on-campus, Monday 6th, Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th February. Events are for our students and graduates, so there will be a focus on Film and Media from Self-employment Strategies to Selling Work Online. University of Lincoln Careers said: “All sessions have limited space, so each is operating on a first come, first serve basis. To book your place on events please visit our Eventbrite page and register.  It is likely further sessions will be added as we draw closer to the festival. Dan Davison, LSFM Student | Chris Packham’s BioBlitz Video

Bioblitz-crew_Oct2016The pitch for a video was originally put up on the LSFM Academy Facebook page, where information was being given out about Chris Packham coming to do the University of Lincoln’s first-ever BioBlitz event. I have notifications turned on for the LSFM page (coincidentally this is the most consistent tip I’d pass on to other students), some things may not apply but occasionally a job pops up and I’m usually one of the first to see it. BioBlitz is the term used to describe an area-wide survey of the life during a set time period. In this case it was a full day on 3rd October 2016 at Brayford Pool campus. We had a meeting with various staff at the School of Life Sciences – organisers of the event – and tutors from Lincoln School of Film & Media (LSFM). Here’s a BioBlitz short film with Visiting Professor, at the School of Life Sciences & LSFM, and naturalist presenter Chris Packham captured by a LSFM crew.

Meet the Graduates 2016 | Clip: Question Time

Meet-the-Graduates-logo-1024x435Meet the Graduates is our annual alumni networking event between our current and former students.  It’s a superb opportunity to share experiences and make connections with the working world. MtG 2016 held its popular Question Time hosted by Daniel J Layton (Class of 2012). Our audience with alumni spoke about life post-university on anything our students wanted to know. Douglas M. Worth, LSFM Student | Review on RTS Masterclasses

I’m a Year 2 Student

The Royal Television Society (RTS), an educational charity promoting the arts and science of television, held another series of its student masterclasses on the 14th and 15th November 2016. The first was all about television programming, covering drama, documentaries, journalism and entertainment. In an interview style talk, each speaker would answer questions about their careers, with clips of their work intersected and with an occasional audience Q&A.

PROGRAMMING 

First to speak was BAFTA award winner writer/director Sally Wainwright, known for her 2014 drama series Happy Valley. One of the main points in her talk was less is more, an example of this was the end of episode four where the main character has a brutal fight scene, she states part of this was cut as it appeared too violent but it still had the same impact, especially when they decided not to have the end music but the police emergency radio tone through the credits which had previously appeared in the series when an officer was attacked and killed. Alumni Q&A session | LSFM Creative Enterprise module

Love our graduates back on-campus to share experiences and connect with our students from our annual network event Meet the Graduates (2nd November 2016) to teaching modules. TODAY half a dozen alumni will join our final year students in the Creative Enterprise session and module co-ordinator Zara Healy said: we welcome 6 of our graduates who are all working in multimedia roles. They have all graduated within the last 5 years from LSFM – some are freelance, some are employed full-time and at least 3 have set up their own creative industry companies. The one and a half hour session will be a Question and Answer about how this module’s assessment – pitch and paperwork – has helped graduates in their own pitches, how to develop ideas and present them to help them in their roles in the Media industry.

Hannah Wilson, Class of 2012 | Designer at Grazia Magazine

HannahWilson_2003GradI can’t quite believe that I moved to Lincoln to start my degree just over 6 years ago now, and that I’ve had a full time job in London for over three!  I studied Contemporary Lens Media, now BA (Hons) Photography, at Lincoln, and can honestly say I wouldn’t have the job I do today without my degree from the university; not only because of the skills that I learnt whilst studying, or even just having the title on my CV, but the fact that it gave me three years of uninterrupted time to build a solid portfolio that I could proudly take to interview with prospective employers. Our lecturers used to tell us to treasure the time, because rarely would we ever have as much time to invest in making work again. How right they were!  

I currently work at Grazia magazine in London. My role is on the the art desk, designing pages for the magazine and editing images to choose the best ones to send to print each week. Continue reading →
