Last week I was interviewed as an expert on talkSPORT’s overnight show regarding F1. It was quite a lucky set of circumstances that put me in the situation, but it was a fantastic experience!

Gemma Lowe’s business start-up

2012 LSM graduate Gemma Lowe received a bursary from Enterprise Inc. at the University of Lincoln to start her own business as an audio specialist and voice-over artist.  Her story coincides with the 10th anniversary of Sparkhouse, with its Open Days this week.  Gemma’s in no doubt that the help she got was “crucial” to setting up on her own, and she can now reflect on the experience.

Gemma-Lowe_pic2It’s great being my own boss and it really keeps me motivated, but being self‐employed hasn’t exactly been what I had expected (find out why below)!  I am a voice-over artist with a passion for audio recording and production. I have experience in radio presenting and people regularly told me that I have a ‘voice for radio’, so this really got me thinking what else I could use my voice for.  Gemma’s Q & A session.  Continue reading

TomSka on TV about YouTube

Tom Ridgewell TomSkaLSM graduate Thomas Ridgewell (a.k.a TomSka) is a digital media producer and he creates content on YouTube. The video sharing site has just celebrated its eighth birthday (23rd April) and TomSka talked on Sky News about his YT work.

Tom started his YouTube channel when he was a second year LSM undergraduate and now he’s listed as a successful British YouTube creator. TomSka is in the top twenty of the most popular online video bloggers on YouTube UK, as we posted earlier this month, along with his fellow LSM Graduate Chris Bingham.  You can see the top twenty list online in the Guardian/ the Observer.

Freelance Video Producer

Freelance Video Producer

I graduated in 2010 with a BA (Hons) Media Production degree but didn’t feel like I was quite ready to start looking for work just yet. I wanted to learn more skills and create a bigger body of work. With this in mind I decided to carry on my education with an MA Media Production degree. Before the BA I hadn’t had any previous experience in filmmaking and so those first three years had some steep learning curves.

While at the time of completing the degree I felt I had learnt a tremendous amount, I wanted another year to hone my skills, to use this knowledge to create my own pieces of work. The resources and equipment, guidance from experienced practitioners, and a year to create four pieces of original independent work all made the decision an easy one. Looking back I know this was a good decision. Continue reading

David Clancy’s update

Dave Clancy_April2013This is my first blog post for a while – and in that time a lot has happened! I’ll quickly run through my life since Uni via a few links to previous blog posts, then bring you up to date with where I am currently, followed by a few hints & tips for current students.

For example, attend events like Meet the Graduates – I wish they’d had this back in my day! It’s a good chance to compare and contrast people who were in your shoes quite recently and figure out the direction you want to take.  I graduated from Media Production in 2007.  I was fortunate enough to immediately find work with Interflora British Unit as their in-house Video Producer.   Continue reading

Phil Matejtschuk, class of 2012

These first months have been the busiest of my life – but I have learnt from them every single day.

Having graduated from the BA (Hons) Media Production course, I was awaiting response from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) after interviewing for their PgDip Sound Design For The Theatre course, which was brand new this year, and listed a maximum of three places available in the prospectus. A few weeks later, I received the letter I was hoping for……….. Continue reading

Andrew Sanders update

Q: Why are Contracts like Train Connections? A: They Never Arrive When You Need Them.

It is literally three years ago since I wrote my first blog for the LSM page. I know this because I just read it again to remind myself what I wrote in preparation for writing this entry. Hopefully my grammar has improved since then!

Three years ago I had been working for a little while on a show called My First Place, a real estate show about first time homebuyers. I was a production coordinator for the show so I was in charge of getting the legal releases required for the show so we could film people and locations. I loved this job, it was great fun.
