Rosie Turner, Class of 2015 | Work-life since leaving Lincoln

Since leaving Lincoln and heading down to London, these past few months have been unbelievably busy! At the moment I have just taken on a contract as an Assistant Producer with Social Life, a social media agency based in London, founded by Ex Radio 1 social leads. Our clients include MTV UK, X Factor, First Dates, CBBC and Red Bull Media to name a few. My role involves a bit of everything as we are a start-up business! My average week will consist of meetings with clients, developing social media strategies, video editing, photography, planning the filming of gigs with our music clients, organising schedules for the press launches of TV shows and booking locations for events!

I progressed to the role after finishing my trainee scheme at Channel 4 as a freelance Social Networker alongside my degree. Continue reading →

Jack Johnston, Class of 2009 | BBC Production Award

Congrats to our alumni who work on BBC TV’s Springwatch on winning an in-house award for the most sustainable production team. 2009 Media Production Graduate Jack Johnston’s role was Lead Edit Assist (now Editor on BBC World Wide versions of the show). He said: Springwatch is a three week Live Natural History TV event with 12 BBC Two shows as well as a multitude of online and red button shows broadcasting 24 hours a day. With huge numbers of live cameras set up across a nature reserve, a production team of over 100 people and miles of cables, it’s an exciting production to be a part of.

I graduated from Lincoln back in 2009 and have now been working on the “Watches” in post production for a year. Laurence Whitaker joined the team early in 2015 as part of the research team. After talking in the office one day we found out that we had in fact both graduated from Lincoln, Laurence in 2011. The series this year went very well, drawing in fantastic viewing figures and giving birth to a new national hero, Spineless Si, a tiny stickleback fish who just wanted to be a good father! At only 26 years old, I feel incredibly fortunate to be in the position I am right now. Most people my age in this industry are still working as runners, making teas and fetching lunches. Some may be working in transfer or as an assistant, dealing with files, deliverables and setting up sessions. I decided to send in my alumni story to offer my own insight as someone who has now been in the audio post industry for nearly 5 years. This is a recent piece of sound design I finished for Pierre Michel, creative director at Digital Domain in LA.

Frequency Festival 2015 | Trailer & Doco

Frequency Festival of Digital Culture will be on in Lincoln (UK) from 23rd October to 1st November 2015 and you can be a part of it. Organisers said: the biennial festival provides a platform to celebrate the pioneering spirit of digital innovation and culture through exhibition, creative collision and debate. Anna Leask, LSFM Student | Looking China 2015 Diary & Doco

Anna Leask was one of six student-producers from the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media who were selected to take part in Looking China 2015. ‘This was the biggest adventure I have ever had and I will remember every minute of it’ – that was the last entry in her diary to record her time on this global film -making project, which aimed to enhance cultural communication between China and the world through the art of film. Anna said: This is a ten minute documentary film I made in Chengdu/China for the Looking China 2015 project. I worked with two Chinese volunteers who helped to organise locations and translate for me. I was cinematographer, sound, director and editor. My film is about Sichuan Embroidery in Anjing Town. It focuses on the workers and their stories.

Anna will be in her third year studying Media Production in the new academic year 2015-16 at the University of Lincoln (UK). She has shared her diary during the Looking China Project. Continue reading →

Looking China 2015 | Global filmmaking project

News from University of Lincoln School of Film & Media: Documentaries about Chinese culture have been created by University of Lincoln filmmakers as part of a global workshop. Six students from LSFM were chosen to take part in a global workshop called Looking China 2015 – to enhance cultural communication between China and the rest of the world through the art of film.

The LSFM students travelled to Sichuan University of Media and Communication in Chengdu this year, as fellow filmmakers from universities across king China is organised by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture at Beijing Normal University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country, and the link was established with Lincoln as a result of Professor Brian Winston’s Visiting Fellowship there. Students Lucy Norton, Bryony Hooper, Tara Clements, Granby Limb, Emma Bridgewood, and Anna Leask each produced a short ten minute film, all of which will now be shown across the world via the Looking China YouTube channel.

Matt North, Class of 2012 | LSFM Mentor and NEW Audio Website

Audio Production 2012 Graduate Matt North is one of the School’s inspirational industry mentors and he’ll be available again for mentoring an undergraduate in the new academic year. Matt said he really enjoyed being part of the LSFM Mentoring scheme this year (2014/15) with Emma Wapshott.

Matt works as a Media & Production Support Technician at the University of East Anglia and is a freelance audio producer. He’s shared that it’s been almost a year in designing/editing but today I can finally unveil my new website. I’ve worked with a web developer on a complete redesign which now has an up-to-date portfolio, credits database and showreel.

Lucy Davies, Student Work Experience | Whistledown Productions

From the 8^th June until 12th June I received a brilliant opportunity to work at an independent radio production company called Whistledown Productions. The indie produce weekly programmes for BBC Radio 4 including Feedback, BBC World Service’s Over to You as well as several documentaries on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. Whistledown have won a variety of awards for their work including a Sony Award in 2003 and Indie of the Year at the Radio Production Awards 2014.

I undertook several jobs at the company which included learning how to use SADiE which is a piece of editing software that the BBC use and is a very important programme to learn if you want to create programmes for the BBC. Continue reading →

Emily McSorley, 2015 Graduand | Intern now a Job, North One TV

I was fortunate enough to receive a four week work placement with North One Television on June the 1^st. After just finishing my final year jumping into this four week internship was amazing! From my first year I always knew I wanted to work in television so I worked incredibly hard to receive work experience including one week as an Office Runner at Objective Productions, freelance work as a Junior Researcher and working on a Lincolnshire feature film as a Production Assistant. It was these snippets of work experience and an obvious determination to work in factual entertainment that I believe secured me this position and I would urge all students to take on whatever experience you can as it will benefit you massively when applying for entry level positions. Janice Kearns, LSFM Senior Lecturer | Sheffield Doc/Fest 2015

LSFM Senior Lecturer Janice Kearns said: This year’s Sheffield International Doc/Fest (5-10 June 2015) was bigger and better than ever with a mixture of film screenings, presentations, discussions, masterclasses, pitching sessions, live performances, exhibitions, installations and interactive media; as well as opportunities to meet funders and commissioners and chat to filmmakers and other people in the industry. There were several LSFM students and graduates working as volunteers at the festival, which is a great way to get involved.

For me highlights were: a live musical performance of the soundtrack to Michael Nyman’s War Work: 8 songs with film with a screening of the film; a really good pitching session for research funding for an environmentally themed TV series; a session on getting your film funded; some really interesting films including India’s Daughter (dir. Leslee Udwin), The Russian Woodpecker (dir. Chad Gracia ) Star Men (dir. Alison Rose) and The Look of Silence (dir. Joshua Oppenheimer), a companion piece to the acclaimed The Act of Killing and themed strands featuring films by Albert Maysles and John Akomfrah. Continue reading →
