Call for Submissions | Top class media work for LUMAS event

Invitation to our creatives from Sarah Barrow, Head of Lincoln School of Film & Media, about the new event LUMAS – Lincoln University Media Arts Showcase. 2013 Grad Jack Howard will be presenting this new event to celebrate success! LUMAS will be on 24th February and is open to our alumni, students and staff.

LUMAS_logoPlease send submissions for this year’s inaugural LUMAS event. We are looking for TOP CLASS MEDIA WORK in any format (audio | photo | short film | digital | radio | animation | script | design) to showcase and to be considered for an award. The deadline’s Monday 9th February at MIDNIGHT!

The Magpie animated film | Screening at BFI Future Film Fest

BFI-logoThe BFI Future Film Festival (20th-22nd February) is in its eighth year, and organisers said “it is bigger and better than ever!” On Friday 20th it will be having a new Animation+ day.  The Fest will be screening The Magpie, a film that was made by former Lincoln School of Film & Media students. You can now watch The Magpie, which was created when in their final year as animation students, by William Wivell and Gary Davies. Will’s got in touch to add: credit, too, to Jake Longworth, the 3D concept work and post-production guy and Estelle Sharpe, who assisted with the animation. The sound design was created by audio production graduates Lilly Cording and Alex O’Brien.  Alex said: “The Magpie was a fantastic project to be a part of. I learnt a lot about working with animation and how important music and sound really are in this genre. As a team we are incredibly proud to have our film shown at the BFI Future Film Festival next month and we are excited to see what may come of it.”

Darren Scales, Class of 2008 | The Drift by Backyard Productions

After three years in the making … with a budget of £5,000 … the support of hundreds of volunteers … the premier of The Drift (2014) science-fiction feature film was on Saturday at the University of Lincoln. Reviews are coming in from Midlands Movies to ITV News.

Industry alumni on-campus | Mondays 10 Nov-1 Dec 5-6pm | EMMTEC

Our alumni networking with students at Meet the Graduates is a main event at the Lincoln School of Film & Media. But LSFM have alumni coming on-campus all year to share their experiences with students. Senior Lecturer Dave McCaig  has organised graduates from industry on Mondays: 10, 17, 24 Nov and 1st Dec. He said: these alumni demonstrate the strength of the multi-disciplinary degrees at LSFM. With a strong background in media practices during their degrees and a combination of hard work and ambition, these guest speakers have shown that the School’s highly valued in the media industries. We are very pleased that our graduates have returned to pass on their knowledge. Monday in EMMTEC 5-6pm:

Sean StrangeMon 10th November Sean Strange, Class of 2013:  As well as doing his own freelance work Sean is currently a staff photographer at F/stop Event Photography. His previous experience includes, events photographer for The Imperial War Museum and press photographer for RAF Waddington.

  • Mon 17th November Aleysha Minns, Class of 2013:  AV freelancer with experience at Revolver Films, C4 and C5 amongst others. Also one of LSFM inspirational industry mentors. She said: what do you want to know about the world of TV? Send me some suggestions to include (on 17th)!
  • Mon 24th November Joel Murray, Class of 2011: Digital marketing co-ordinator at Lincoln BIG and Visit Lincoln.
  • Mon 1st  Dec Darren Scales, Class of 2008: Indie Filmmaker at Backyard Productions. His latest community project on a £5000 budget was The Drift film.  It was created with the help of volunteers and LSFM media students & graduates.

Nick Loven, Class of 2001 | Screening ‘Tell Them of Us’ 8 Nov

WAG_Nick_Loven_150w2001 alumnus and indie filmmaker Nick Loven directed ‘Tell Them of Us’ by WAG Screen, which is a community filmmaking group.  The film will be screened from this Saturday at The Collection. The “film aims to breathe life into the cold stillness of a war memorial. It is the story of one Lincolnshire family during WW1.”  In fact, it is based on a true story about the Crowder family from unpublished archive letters.

The film’s title comes from an epitaph written in 1916: When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.

Phil Stevens, Class of 2010 | Screening ‘The Road to Rome’ 4 Nov

It’s a doco film directed by Phil Stevens, one of our industry mentors, and narrated by Sir Ian McKellen. LSFM Senior Lecturer Chris Hainstock posted the story and invites you to the University of Lincoln: Tue 4 Nov | 6pm – 7.30pm | EMMTEC MT007 | Brayford Pool | FREE ADMISSION

The-Road-to-Rome_castandcrewIn the Summer of 2014 Filmmaker and LSFM Lecturer Philip Stevens directed a documentary which was as taxing for the filmmakers as it was for the participants. The Director of Photography was Stewart MacGregor who along with Philip is a graduate of the School of Film and Media from 2010 ( and in 2011 they won a regional RTS Award for Greasepaint). The Road To Rome, narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, is a feature-length documentary about three authors of historical fiction who walk from Naples to Rome dressed as Roman soldiers to raise money for charity. So far the walk has raised over £25,000 in donations for charities Médecins Sans Frontières and Combat Stress. You can see the trailer from Urban Apache Films.

Michael Henry, Class of 2009 | Screening ‘Time and Place’ 1st Nov

Michael-Henry_TimeandPlace_releaseOne of our creative media mentors is 2009 alumnus Michael Henry at Quandary Productions who’ll be at ‘Meet the Graduates’ network event this Wednesday to share advice about indie filmmaking and opportunities. Timely because he’s just completed the final cut on his latest film ‘Time and Place‘ (2014). There will be a free public screening on 1st November in Lincoln (UK) and the film will be released with ‘Pay-What-You-Want’ On Demand. The production team said ‘it’s the best thing we’ve ever made’. Mike said he’s excited in his latest posting:

Finally, the time has come! After months of hard work ‘TIME AND PLACE’ is finalised, exported, and sent off for DVD batch production. We premiere the film in one week, crowdfunders can expect their DVDs a day or two earlier next week, and we’re very excited about the ‘Pay-What-You-Want’ release on November 1st – same date as the free screening at The Collection in Lincoln. ‘TIME AND PLACE‘ took a good nine months to write, three to shoot, seven months of editing and will no doubt be months before I consider it entirely over, once all the promotion is done and festival fates are sealed. Royal Television Society Midlands | LSFM Student Nominations

RTS_logo_150wHead of Lincoln School of Film & Media (LSFM) Dr Sarah Barrow: Great news – we have 2 nominations for the Midlands Royal TV Society awards this year in the student category. Every year for the past 12 (roughly!) we’ve been nominated and most years we’ve won at least one award; one year we also clinched a national award. The team of graduates who made these 2 films are also those who went to China this summer.  

The student team were Thomas Mckie, Ashley Wilks, Luke Winter and Alexander Whitcombe (and at the time the four were Wallbreaker Productions) who have been nominated for the 2014 Royal Television Society (Midlands) Student Awards. Their films are in the student categories: ‘Comedy & Entertainment’ for Facebook Anonymous and in ‘Drama’ for The Last Fisherman – in the latter, location sound and mixing was by visiting US student Rob Paulson.

NEWS UPDATE 30 Oct:  Facebook Anonymous did win an RTS regional award. Yay!  The satricial film will be put forward for the national RTS Award nominations (held next Spring in London). Here’s a clip of the students at the RTS regional awards:

Congrats to our Class of 2014

GraduationDay_UoLCongratulations Class of 2014. Today our graduation ceremony will be at Lincoln Cathedral from 2.30pm. This year’s graduands are already making their mark in the world.  Here is a small snapshot of some of them.   Rachel Hagreen is working at VideoJug; Gemma Benefer has a reporter’s job at KCFM; Natalie Dobson is a Junior Producer at Gems TV; Sasha Tucker has an internship at Vodafone, which he secured after being part of the student team who won the national 24-hour challenge with its e-cigarette concept; Faye Wood  had an online media internship at the College of Arts, University of Lincoln and said she has now been “hired as the web and multimedia officer” here; Steve Staff is an intern with Knight Hall Agency for a month and will update us here when he’s finished, along with an idea about a script network he’ll be setting up; Luke Werra was chosen for the BBC Talent Pool; Danielle Crooks created the soundtrack for an animation project, Lullaby, which was led by Lucy Clay and Amy Fairclough. It’s been nominated for the Student Competition section at Animasyros 7.0 International Animation Festival and will be screened there in October; Dean Dobbs will make his debut guest presenting on 15 Sept (along with 2013 grad Jack Howard as Jack and Dean) on Radio 1 with Dan and Phil – part of the show’s vloggers take-over on Mondays 9pm-10pm. [Last night’s was ‘TomSka‘, 2011 alumnus Thomas Ridgewell]; Sophy Taylor is working in Ibiza as a photographer, also an executive videographer for IBZ.TV and she’s been accepted at the New York Film Academy to do a postgraduate course; freelancers Andrew West and Emily Cowlishaw (our blogger) have decided to undertake their MA course at LSFM; a short film My conversations with Katie by Matt Dean was given an honourable mention in the Santa Monica Independent Film Festival; student team (at Wallbreaker Productions) Ash Wilks, Luke Winter, Alex Whitcombe and Tom Mckie’s The Last Fisherman film has been selected to be screened next month at the well established 14th International Student Film Festival Pisek 2014.

Tom’s camera work on The Last Fisherman has been shortlisted in the top six films for the Bill Vinten GTC University Awards. He said: things seem to be going well at the moment and along with graduating, trying to earn enough to pay and all this it’s a bit mad.
