Media Mentors, Gallery | LSFM Student Opportunity

See some of our marvellous media mentors. Thanks to professionals who kindly volunteer their time from their busy work schedules to mentor a student from the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media. Industry Mentor for 2018-19 | Open to LSFM Years 1 and 2

Mentoring-JoAshmanLincoln School of Film & Media 1st & 2nd Year students can APPLY to have a Industry Mentor in the new academic year (2018-19). Our superb School-Industry opportunity is for 20 selected LSFM undergraduates to be mentored by a professional who kindly volunteer their time from the working world. Currently mentors are working in audio production, TV, radio, film, design at Hello! magazine, in photography and multimedia jobs from social media to scriptwriting. This call-out is for any LSFM Level 1 and 2 students – for example from animation, audio production, film & television, media production, media studies and photography – to register their interest. Just download and complete this LSFM_MENTORING-2018:19-StudentForm by Friday 13th April 2018.  Please return your form to Louise Lawlor via email: llawlor@lincoln.ac.uk.

Please note: Successful applicants will be informed during your student Summer break. If you’re selected as a student-mentee you must be available to attend the 1-hour induction on-campus. Neurodivergen Film Fest Winners, DYSPLA | Screening 21.03.2018

DYSPLA_DIMIF_flyer1 copyMedia Production 2008 Grad Kaz Bielecki is the Artistic Director of the first Neurodivergent film festival produced in the UK by the award winning Arts organisation DYSPLA. It works “internationally in film, immersive theatre, installation & digital art to shed light on Dyslexic Narrative and the Dyslexic Aesthetic.” The University of Lincoln School of Film & Media will be screening the winning entries of this film fest on Wednesday 21 March, 1.30-3pm in the Stephen Langton Building (Brayford Pool campus). 

LSFM’s Senior Lecturer Marcella Forster said: The festival showcases work by dyslexic and neurodivergent filmmakers. Festival organisers will introduce students to the winning films and there’ll be an opportunity to ask them questions about the festival. All our students, staff and graduates are welcome to attend.

Student Opportunity, Uni of Lincoln | KDU Programme in Penang

Super student opportunity overseas for first and second year LSFM Media Production undergraduates. Nigel Morris, Principal Lecturer and KDU Tutor, posted: University of Lincoln (UK) has a close partnership with KDU University College in Penang, Malaysia, which delivers a Media Production degree very similar to ours.  Part of the arrangement is for KDU to offer a three-week summer programme in late June to twelve Lincoln students on the following programmes: Accountancy, Business (including joint Business programmes), Computing, Media Production, and PR.  Selection will be via an application process.

Having visited KDU myself last year (and looking forward to going again for the Exam Board this summer) I can vouch for what a friendly, vibrant, fascinating and beautiful place Penang is, and I would urge you to go online to find out more. An Illustrated History of Warner Bros, Rick Senat | 21 Feb at UoL

WarnerBros-logoUniversity of Lincoln (UoL) is delighted to welcome Visiting Professor Rick Senat for a Special Lecture about An Illustrated History of Warner Bros on Wednesday 21st February (Part one) 1pm-4pm, (Part two) 5pm-8pm in the Jackson Lecture Theatre, Brayford Pool campus. The Uni said:  The event is FREE and open to ALL – current and former students, staff and friends. No registration needed – just turn up promptly at 1pm and 5pm. Rick will share insider stories and experiences from his impressive career with Warner Brothers – including a wide range of exclusive clips and still images straight from the WB archive.

Following a few years in Independent production in the UK and the US, Rick worked for Warner Bros. from 1976 until 2002 when he was Senior Vice-President of Business and legal affairs, responsible for activities in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He has been associated with the Harry Potter films, Greystoke, Batman, Superman and a number of Stanley Kubrick’s films. More recently, he consulted on various productions including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Troy, Alfie, Sahara, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc. He was Executive Producer of JK Rowling’s  The Casual Vacancy and the blockbuster 2016 movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them. He is currently executive producing the sequel, Fantastic Beasts, the Crimes of Grindlewald starring Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp and Jude Lawfor release worldwide in November 2018. Hannah Skidmore, Class of 2014 | Aesthetica Fest BAFTA-Recognised

HannahSkidmore-ASFF2017_photo-by-Jim Poyner PhotographyIt was always my aim to remain within the film industry after graduation. “It’s all happening in London. You want a job in film, London’s is the place to be.” Now if I had a pound for every time this was said to me, I might have been able to afford to live in London! But truth be told, moving to London never really crossed my mind. I don’t buy into the fact that you must be in London to have a good job. It’s easy to get caught up in people telling you how important it is to work in the “big city” but I couldn’t disagree more. There is a wealth of talent right across the country that all too often gets overlooked. Don’t get me wrong, London works for many people, but just not me. I’m a big advocate of taking some of the focus off London so that other amazing cities across the UK, such as Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds etc. can flourish and develop. It’s this desire to stand out from the crowd that drew me to Aesthetica. 

Aesthetica-Mag-CoverHere was this incredible business that produced not only one of the most successful arts and culture publications, Aesthetica magazine, but had its own BAFTA-Recognised film festival, international Art Prize and Creative Writing Award. To top it all off, it was right on my doorstep!  Since joining the team last September as Aesthetica’s Marketing Coordinator, it’s been a complete whirlwind. In less than three months I’ve been front and center for the launch of three issues, we’ve opened both the Art Prize and Creative Writing Prize, and hosted the 7th edition of the Aesthetica Short Film Festival.

I can’t begin to explain how rewarding it is to go to work each day and be surrounded by people with as much passion and excitement for film. The Aesthetica Short Film Festival (ASFF) is one of the world’s leading international short film festivals, celebrating independent film from around the world and it really does pride itself on being an outlet for supporting and championing filmmaking. The festival takes place each November across the city of York, showcasing over 300 films from both established and emerging filmmakers, along with numerous industry masterclasses, guest programmes, premiere screenings and special events. To submit your short this year visit: www.asff.co.uk/submit. CreativeCareersFest-poster-Feb2018University of Lincoln’s Creative Careers Festival 2018 from the 5th to 7th February has a range of student opportunities, and some events for recent grads, from selling Art online to creating colourful CVs and from graduate schemes to careers in digital media. Thanks to all for participating. Our Grad Question Time was hosted by Steve Smailes (Class of 2012) with alumni from 2002 to 2017 who shared their experiences, tips and advice about the world of work – at home and abroad. We loved the live link-up with video editor Philip Roberts (Class of 2006) from Crytek in Frankfurt.

Meet the Graduates | Industry Profiles on 8th Nov 2017

See who is planning to come for LSFM’s free industry network event Meet the Graduates. Former students have posted a profile on their experiences since graduating. Our Grads (their work permitting) have spared time to be on-campus with LSFM students on 8th Nov. THIS Wednesday MtG 2017 is your on-campus opportunity to connect with like-minded creatives, make industry links, share tips on job-hunting and collaborate on projects. 

LSFM STUDENTS are invited to take their theatre seat for 2pm in the Stephen Langton Building (SLB) for the Graduate Question Time panel. Ask questions to our alumni who work – on staff and freelance contracts – across the media industry from big corporates (BBC TV) to indies (Epix Media).  Please note: Lisa Rustage has just got work on a feature film –  at short notice as things tend to be in her job – so she said: “Truly disappointed I cannot make it!”
