A brand new blog post and another brand new job. That’s right, I’ve moved again. I’ve only been in London for under 2 years and this is already my third job. But this one is the one. In July 2015 I wrote a blog on here about having to start my own cooking channel because it was so difficult to get a job in online food video production. Little did I know that starting How To Kitchen would actually help me secure a job on my favourite cooking channel on YouTube, SORTEDfood.com.

As of April 2016, I became a camera operator and editor for the channel and have loved every second of it so far. This was the video I filmed on my second day working for them. Needless to say I nearly threw up on my first shoot day (not even joking).

Since then, I’ve been busy shooting and editing a number of their varied videos. The interview process was absolutely terrifying. Continue reading →

LSFM Degree Show 2016 | Lincoln Theatre Royal on 14th & 15th May

University of Lincoln School of Film and Media final year students will showcase their creative work at the Lincoln Theatre Royal THIS weekend, and YOU are invited. It is the first time the historic city venue has staged a two-day multimedia exhibition by third year undergraduates and it is the first time the annual event is off-campus. The LSFM Degree Show is an opportunity for the public to see original, experimental and creative content in the Grade II listed theatre: from pop-up spaces like the Writers’ Room and take part in script reading to dressing rooms transformed into individual cinema booths. Screenings will be in the 450-seat Victorian auditorium, also above and below the stage will be design and digital exhibitions. Even the bar will turn into a gallery and backstage a sound and radio installation space. The LSFM Degree Show is FREE and open to the public on Saturday 11am-7pm & Sunday 11am-4pm. Wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor and some content may not be suitable for children. Here’s the programme and this is the LSFM Degree Show trailer. BAFTA TV Awards 2016 | LSFM Alumni on Wolf Hall and Big Blue Live

British Academy TV Awards, last night, was celebrated by LSFM alumni who worked in the production teams of BBC shows. Well done to BBC One’s Big Blue Live, winner for Live Event. Part of the team were our 2002 graduate, producer/director of wildlife TV shows Joanne Ashman said it was “the hardest, and the best job I’ve ever done. So proud to be part of the team” and our 2009 Media Production alumnus who is a freelance editor, specialising in wildlife documentary, Jack Johnston (pictured with Dan Wardle) said: “such an amazing team and such an amazing production!” Jack is one of LSFM’s Industry Mentors. You can read his archive post on this blog when the BBC Springwatch team won an inhouse Production Award in 2015.

Congrats to BBC Two’s Wolf Hall – it picked up two awards: Mark Rylance for leading actor and also won in the category for Best Drama Series. Our 2013 Film and Television graduate Ashley Turner was “thrilled” to work as a floor runner on the BBC’s six part historical drama series and shared from experience how to get work as a runner – from the BBC’s Production Talent Pool to the adaptation of Dame Hilary Mantel’s best-selling period drama Wolf Hall. Andy Ellis, Class of 2002 | Lost Village Fest 27th-29th May 2016

Our BA (Hons) Media Production graduate, also MSc International Business, Andy Ellis is the Director at Major Label and he is organising Lost Village Festival in Lincolnshire from 27th to 29th May. The fest is a ‘musical journey like no other‘ said Andy: More than a music festival, Lost Village is an immersive experience taking place in a long forgotten forest – a surreal world misplaced in the sands of time. As you wonder its leafy corridors you’ll discover places such as the Abandoned Chapel, Burial Ground and Forgotten Cabin. One minute you’re dancing to disco under a canopy of leaves, the next you’re face-to-face with one of the village’s native inhabitants.

The Empty Throne, LSFM | Wins Educational Multimedia Award BUFVC

LSFM has won the British Universities Film and Video Council 2016 (BUFVC) Learning on Screen Educational Multimedia Award for The Empty Throne, directed by Philip Stevens (2010 alumnus & LSFM lecturer) Urban Apache Films and written by Laura Turner. Well done to the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media (staff, graduates, students, et al). The Empty Throne was a commission for the new arts and culture site 1215today.com: ‘It was created as the centrepiece for the website’s launch event at Lincoln Castle. The film was designed to give a tonal glimpse into some of the themes and events that led to the sealing of the Magna Carta by King John.’

Good luck to finalists in the Lincolnshire Digital Awards 2016 on Thursday at The Engine Shed. Organisers said the awards are “to both reward and bring individuals and companies together who are at the forefront of digital within the Greater Lincolnshire area.” In the Best Digital Start-Up category are four companies for this award and two of the finalists are our alumni with a business that is less than 3 years old:-

Philip Stevens, Class of 2010 | Crowdfunder for ‘The Knock’

Lincoln School of Film & Media staff need your support to raise £6,500 for a short drama called The Knock by Urban Apache Films. Writer/Director and part-time Lecturer, 2010 alumnus, Philip Stevens and Senior Lecturer Dominque Webb are on the way to their target. Thanks for pledges in to date and they said: BFI and Creative England are part funding our new film, and as part of the agreement we have launched a crowdfunder campaign. We are honoured to be part of the Creative England and BFI NET.WORK’s 2016 iShorts scheme, and we have been awarded £5000 by them towards the production of our short film, but filmmaking is an expensive process – and to make the most of this incredible opportunity we NEED your support. Charlotte Downie, FTV Student | My Erasmus Exchange in Austria

Charlotte Downie a Film and Television Year 2 undergraduate at LSFM posted about her 3-month Erasmus exchange at Alpen-Adria University, in Klagenfurt. She would recommend this international opportunity, that is open to FTV students only.

On hearing of the chance to live and study in Austria, I knew this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss. I had never been to Austria, only known people who had been but the chance of learning a new language and to experience a different culture whilst living in the country was an exciting prospect.

1215.today Artistic Digital Commission | LSFM & Arts Council

1215.today is a major LSFM/Arts Council project that commemorates 800 years of the Magna Carta with an online platform that gives young people (aged 14-24) a space to debate and create. Organisers said: We are inviting a filmmaker, animator or artist / maker / practitioner working with moving image to work with us in the development of a new artistic digital commission. Artists do not need to have previous experience in working online as they will be supported through the process by expert creative technologists. Artists will need to be open to new ways of working and welcome critical conversation and collaboration, particularly with young people. By looking, listening and talking about societal and individual rights explored across the breadth of art forms, we aim to agitate and engage young people to create work about big issues.
